This is going to be an uncomfortable article. Bear with me.
But after three years on the road I've noticed something that bothers me. For some people in this lifestyle, drinking isnt occasional — its daily. And the culture around it makes it easy to normalize.
I'm not pointing fingers. Im not your parent. And Im definitely not saying dont drink — I enjoy a beer as much as anyone. But I've watched people at campgrounds crack their first one at noon and not stop until bedtime. Every day. For weeks.
The isolation of RV life can make it worse. Youre away from your normal social circles, your routines, your accountability structures. The campfire becomes the social center and drinks are always flowing.
I talked to a guy at a campground in New Mexico — really open conversation — who told me he realized he'd been drinking every single day for seven months straight. Didnt think it was a problem because "everyone does it." When he stopped, he was surprised how hard it was.
Im not writing this to preach. Im writing it because nobody else seems to want to say it out loud. If your drinking has increased since you started RVing, thats worth paying attention to. If you cant enjoy a campfire without a drink in your hand, thats worth thinking about.
And if you do decide to cut back or quit, know that mocktails by the campfire are just as good. I promise.
