Gene retired from teaching at 55. I left nursing at 52. We didn't win the lottery — we planned, saved aggressively, and made some good decisions along the way. The RV lifestyle is a huge part of how we make our retirement savings stretch.
The Math
Our combined retirement accounts throw off about $48,000 per year. Social Security kicks in later and will add roughly $30,000 combined. For now, we live on $4,000 per month.
Our mortgage payment in Michigan was $1,400. Property tax was $350. Utilities another $300. Thats $2,050/month just for shelter. The RV costs us about $800/month for campgrounds (heavy on state parks and boondocking) plus $200 for fuel since we move slowly.
Net savings on shelter alone: roughly $1,000/month. That money goes to health insurance premiums which are our biggest expense until Medicare at 65.
What We Spend On
We dont deprive ourselves. We eat well — lots of cooking in the RV but nice restaurants when we find them. We do activities — national parks, museums, local attractions. We visit grandkids which means longer stays and sometimes flying them out to meet us.
Advice for Others Planning This
Get your health insurance figured out BEFORE you quit. This was our biggest planning challenge. ACA marketplace plans work but they vary hugely by state. We technically maintain residency in South Dakota for tax and insurance purposes.
Test it before you commit. We rented an RV for two months before buying ours. Worth every penny of the rental cost to know this was really what we wanted.
Freedom doesnt require millions. It requires a plan and the courage to execute it.

Well thought out article. Gene read it over my shoulder and nodded the whole time.
We are not full-timers but we get out every chance we can. Useful stuff here.
We learned most of this the hard way. Nice to see it written out clearly.
Our family does something similar but we add a scavenger hunt component the kids love.
Totally agree with you on that point.
