Whiskers — my cat, dont judge the name — has been my RV copilot for two years. She adapts to new campgrounds in about 30 seconds. Jumps to the windowsill, surveys her new kingdom, takes a nap. Easy.
But getting to this point was NOT easy and theres a lot that the cute instagram posts dont show you.
The Vet Situation
Finding a vet in a new state is stressful. Whiskers needed an emergency visit in rural New Mexico once and the nearest vet was 45 minutes away. Carry copies of vaccination records, know your pet's medical history by heart, and research vet clinics along your route before you need them.
Temperature Management
This is the big one. RVs heat up FAST. In summer I cannot leave Whiskers in the RV without the AC running. Period. I have a temperature monitor that sends alerts to my phone if the interior goes above 80 degrees. Ive cut hikes short, left restaurants early, and rearranged my entire day around making sure my cat isnt overheating.
In winter the opposite — propane heater has to stay on or the RV gets dangerously cold for a small animal.
Campground Pet Policies
Most campgrounds allow dogs. Cats are more of a grey area. Some parks have breed restrictions, weight limits, or pet deposit fees. Always call ahead. I've been turned away twice because of their "no cats" policy which I didnt know existed.
The Hair
Oh my god the hair. In 200 square feet of living space, cat hair gets EVERYWHERE. I vacuum every single day. Sometimes twice. My little handheld dustbuster is the most-used tool in my van.
Would I travel without Whiskers? Absolutely not. She's my whole heart. But it adds a layer of planning and worry that pet-free RVers don't have to deal with. Worth it? Every single whisker.

Reminds me of a trip we took back in 04. Simpler times but same challenges.
My teardrop trailer setup is proof you dont need much space to be happy.
Yep, trial and error is the best teacher out there.
This is spot on. We tell every new RVer the same thing.
