This is important so Im going to be direct. Most RV-traveling parents have their car seats installed incorrectly. We did for the first six months of our trip. A certified car seat technician at a fire station in Alabama looked at ours and turned pale.
The Problem
RV seating positions are not the same as car seating positions. The lap belts are different widths, the seat angles are different, and many RV seats dont have the LATCH anchors that car seats are designed to use. This means the installation methods you learned for your minivan may not work in your RV.
What You Need to Know
Not every seating position in your RV is approved for car seats. Check your RV owners manual — it will specify which positions are rated for child restraints. If it doesnt say, assume it isnt.
Forward-facing dinette seats are generally NOT safe for car seats even if they have seatbelts. The belt geometry is wrong and in a crash the forces are not properly distributed.
The safest option for most motorhomes is a rear-facing seat in a forward-facing position with a seatbelt that locks. Test the belt — pull it all the way out to engage the locking mechanism, then feed it back while keeping tension.
What We Do Now
Our two younger kids ride in properly installed car seats in designated positions. Our oldest (13) wears a seatbelt in an approved seating position. Nobody walks around while the motorhome is moving. I know some families let kids hang out in the back — we dont. Its not worth the risk.
Find a certified car seat technician near you. They do free checks at fire stations nationwide. Get it inspected. Get it right. This is the one thing you cannot afford to get wrong.
