y'all we play so many games at camp that our neighbors probably think were crazy. but our philosophy is simple — if the kids are playing theyre not fighting. and if theyre not fighting tammy jo and i can actually enjoy our evening. everybody wins.

Kubb (Viking Chess). this is our number one. its a lawn game where you throw wooden batons at blocks. sounds boring. its incredibly addictive. we play adults vs kids and the kids beat us more often than id like to admit. set costs about $30 and fits in a small bag.

Capture the Flag.

Cards Against Campfire. its like Cards Against Humanity but family friendly. someone at a campground in tennessee introduced us to it and weve been hooked since. laughing until you cry around a campfire is peak camping.

Flashlight tag. regular tag but at night with flashlights. if the beam hits you youre it. simple and the kids LOVE it.

Cornhole. classic for a reason. we keep a travel set in the truck bed at all times. great for meeting neighbors too — challenge the next site to a tournament and youve got instant friends.

Nature bingo. make a bingo card with things to spot — specific birds, trees, sounds. first one to get bingo wins. keeps them exploring for hours.

Storytelling around the fire. each person adds a sentence to a story. it always goes somewhere ridiculous and hilarious. no equipment needed. just imagination and marshmallows.

none of these need wifi, batteries, or a charger. just people having fun outside. revolutionary concept i know.

Tom and I just did this on our Pacific Coast trip. 10/10 recommend.

Well thought out article. Gene read it over my shoulder and nodded the whole time.
