I'm a numbers person so when I decided to try both Harvest Hosts and Boondockers Welcome I tracked everything. Every stay, every mile, every dollar. Heres the breakdown after 12 months.

Harvest Hosts: $99/year

We used it 14 times. Mostly wineries and farms. The experience ranges from incredible (a vineyard in Napa with a tasting included) to meh (a parking lot behind a brewery in middle-of-nowhere Ohio).

The app is decent. Reviews from other members help you avoid the duds.

Boondockers Welcome: $80/year

Used this 8 times. The concept is different — you're parking on someone's private property. A driveway, a ranch, a farm. It's more personal. We met some amazing people this way.

Quality varies wildly. One host had full hookups and a view of the mountains. Another was basically their gravel driveway next to the highway. You really need to read the listing details carefully.

No expectation to spend money which is nice. Truly free overnight parking.

The Verdict

If I had to pick one? Harvest Hosts. More locations, more consistent quality, and the winery/brewery angle makes it feel like an experience rather than just a parking spot.

But honestly both paid for themselves within 3-4 uses. If you boondock regularly just get both. The combined $179 saves you thousands per year on campground fees.

The math doesn't lie.

This makes me want to plan a trip just to try it out.

Question — does this work the same with a smaller rig?

After years on the road I can confirm — this is solid advice.
