I get asked about safety more than anything else. "Arent you scared camping alone in the middle of nowhere?" Honestly? No. Because I have a system and I follow it religiously.

Here are my non-negotiable boondocking safety rules.

Always tell someone where you are. I text my sister my GPS coordinates and planned departure date every time I move. If she doesnt hear from me by the departure date plus 24 hours, she knows to raise the alarm. Simple but critical.

Scout during daylight. I never pull into a new boondocking spot after dark. Arrive with enough light to assess the area, check your escape routes, and get a feel for who else is around.

Park facing out. Always position your vehicle so you can drive straight out without turning around. If you need to leave quickly, you need to leave quickly.

Trust your instincts. I mentioned this before but it bears repeating. If something feels wrong — a person, a location, a situation — leave. Dont rationalize it. Dont wait. Just go. Ive driven away from three spots that made my gut tighten. Maybe they were fine. Doesnt matter.

Be aware of your surroundings. When I set up camp I do a walk around the area. Check for other vehicles, check for trash (signs of partying or squatting), check cell signal, identify the nearest main road.

Lock up at night. Doors locked. Windows secured. I sleep with my phone and keys within arms reach. I also have a personal alarm that emits 120 decibels if triggered.

Keep a low profile. I dont advertise that Im alone. When people ask, I sometimes say "my friend is hiking" or "my partner is getting firewood." Not lying to be deceptive — just not broadcasting vulnerability.

Solo boondocking is one of my favorite things in this life. The silence, the stars, the complete freedom. Caution doesnt diminish the joy — it enables it.

The independence of RV life is everything. This captures it perfectly.

Reminds me of a trip we took back in 04. Simpler times but same challenges.

This is spot on. We tell every new RVer the same thing.
