My trip planning process has evolved a lot since I started. Year one was basically "head west and figure it out." That resulted in some amazing spontaneous discoveries and also some spectacularly inefficient backtracking. Now I have a system.
The Apps
Google Maps for the basic route and estimated drive times. But I never trust its default route — it optimizes for speed, not for scenery or RV-friendliness.
Roadtrippers for finding interesting stops along a route. Weird roadside attractions, scenic overlooks, local restaurants. Its like a curated guide to everything between A and B.
Campendium and iOverlander for finding places to sleep. I cross-reference both and read recent reviews. If multiple people say the road is too rough for standard vehicles, I believe them.
GasBuddy for finding cheap fuel along the route. Saving $0.20/gallon adds up when you have a 30-gallon tank.
My Process
I plan one week ahead maximum. Any more and I lose the flexibility that makes solo travel great. I pick a general direction and 2-3 must-see stops. Everything between those stops is improvised based on weather, mood, and recommendations from people I meet.
I avoid driving more than 4 hours in a day. Three is ideal. Anything over 5 and I arrive exhausted and cranky. The journey IS the destination — cant enjoy it if youre white-knuckling the interstate.
I always have a backup plan. If the campsite I wanted is full, I have 2 alternatives scouted. If weather turns bad, I know where the nearest town with amenities is. Flexibility with preparation — thats the sweet spot.
A good route isnt the fastest route. Its the one with the best stories waiting along it.
