About Camel Lake Recreation Area Apalachicola National Forest

Campground in Alabama.

Nestled within the expansive Apalachicola National Forest, Camel Lake Recreation Area offers RV enthusiasts an authentic escape into one of the Southeast's most pristine natural environments. This well-maintained facility serves as the perfect basecamp for exploring over 600,000 acres of protected forest land, featuring dense pine and hardwood stands, clear waterways, and abundant wildlife viewing opportunities throughout the year.

The recreation area centers around scenic Camel Lake itself, a peaceful body of water that invites fishing, boating, and quiet contemplation. The lake's calm waters are home to bass, bream, and catfish, making it an excellent destination for anglers of all skill levels. Whether you're casting a line from the shore or launching a small boat, the lake provides a serene setting that feels worlds away from everyday stress. The surrounding forest creates a natural canopy that keeps the area cool even during warmer months, and the diverse ecosystem supports an impressive array of bird species, making it paradise for birdwatchers and nature photographers.

RV campers will appreciate the straightforward, well-organized facility that prioritizes natural surroundings over commercial development. The area is ideal for families seeking outdoor adventure, couples looking for peaceful getaways, and solitary travelers wanting to reconnect with nature. Hiking trails wind through the forest, offering varying difficulty levels for different fitness levels and interests. These paths reveal stunning vistas, clear streams, and opportunities to spot deer, wild turkeys, and other native wildlife.

The location provides convenient access to the charming Florida Panhandle region while maintaining a remote, undisturbed feel. Nearby towns offer supplies and services when needed, but the recreation area itself encourages visitors to slow down and embrace the simple pleasures of camping. Spring and fall present ideal visiting seasons with comfortable temperatures and vibrant natural beauty. Whether you're seeking a fishing trip, nature immersion, hiking adventure, or simply a quiet retreat among the pines, Camel Lake Recreation Area delivers an authentic RV camping experience that captures the best of Florida's natural heritage.

what an awesome campsite‼️ this was our first experience with our new camper… It was super cold but other than that, it was fabulous. The views are wonderful and the site itself is very well appointed. Easy to get access to everything and just so well accommodated. We look forward to coming back again.

Someone was taking their dogs in the bathrooms as there was a ton of hair in the men's bathroom. I watched a woman take a dog in the women's bathroom and shower. My husband took our broom and swept it best he could after two days. The other complaint is that the host lets his dog run off leash. It ran up to us two different times when we had our dog outside. I ran back to our rig the first time, to access to death and the other time I just scooped up my dog. The dog seems friendly enough but our dog can get snappy when around a rambunctious dog.

Very nice campground. Kept tidy. Restrooms and showers were decent. Someone complained while we were there about them saying they were messy (a little forest debris 🙄). Not easy to keep them perfect when you are in a forest environment and there are backpackers sneaking in to use them. They were just fine. The camp host checked on us and told us to not hesitate to let him if we needed him. Very... Very nice campground. Kept tidy. Restrooms and showers were decent. His dog, Ruby, was also very welcoming 😃 The only thing is the two mile dirt road into the campground. Some potholes need attention, but that was the only thing we would like to improve. There is a nice hiking trail around the lake. We enjoyed a very peaceful two weeks there.

A beautiful place to relax and disconnect. This small campground has about 10 large sites, some with partial hook up. Clean, peaceful, good hiking/walking, bathroom, shower, lake views, swimming beach … Downsides for RVing: dump station is 15-20 miles away, and the road in is horrible! We could only go 2-5 mph.
