We went a before salmon were running and still were able to see bears- including a matriarch “Mocha” clamming on the beach. One of our guides was a retired Alaskan Wildlife Ranger- Nancy- who keeps coming back to the spot to connect and follow up with bears. She had some amazing details about habits, “habituation” and lineage of the Admiralty island bears. Seems like best time to come is second or third week in July when first runs start. In an effort to minimize human impact there are strictly designated areas for viewing. There is no shelter or cover so if you want to sit for a while come prepared to be out in open. It rained on us for four hours and thankfully had the right gear. The walk to viewing area is beautiful and while not marked (bear ate the sign - see photo) it is beautiful old growth forest.

The Rangers are extremely helpful and welcoming. The landscape is gorgeous - almost prehistoric. The wildlife is majestic. These photos are from August. Warm (65°, toasty in the sun, comfy in the shade).

We were a bit too early in the season to see any bears, but we enjoyed the visit.
