About Sanctuary River

Open in summer only (May 20 to mid-September). Sanctuary River is a heavily wooded campground, with screening between most sites. The immediate area is brushy, but nearby mountains offer chances to hike directly from the campground and gain elevation, with views of Mount McKinley to the south possible on clear days, after some strenuous up-hill hiking. Sanctuary is tent-only—you will not find any RVs or other vehicles in this campground. It is accessible only by camper bus.

Sanctuary River offers a unique Alaskan camping experience in one of the state's most pristine wilderness areas. Located in the heart of Alaska's interior, this public campground provides RV travelers with direct access to some of the most spectacular natural scenery the Last Frontier has to offer. The surrounding landscape is characterized by vast tundra, rolling hills, and abundant wildlife viewing opportunities that make every moment outdoors feel like a genuine adventure.

The campground serves as an excellent basecamp for exploring Alaska's remarkable backcountry. The region is known for its incredible wildlife populations, including moose, grizzly bears, caribou, and numerous bird species. Visitors often experience the magic of Alaska's long daylight hours during summer months, when the extended sunshine allows for extended exploration and photography opportunities. The pristine natural environment around Sanctuary River creates an immersive wilderness experience that transports campers far from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

For those seeking outdoor recreation, the surrounding area offers excellent opportunities for hiking, wildlife observation, and photography. The tundra landscape provides unique vistas and the chance to witness Alaska's raw natural beauty up close. The remote location means visitors should come prepared for true wilderness camping, where self-sufficiency and respect for the environment are paramount.

The campground appeals to RV travelers who crave authentic Alaskan experiences and are comfortable with primitive or rustic camping conditions. This is an ideal destination for nature enthusiasts, wildlife photographers, and adventurers looking to explore Alaska's interior. Whether you're interested in spotting bears and moose, experiencing the midnight sun, or simply immersing yourself in untamed wilderness, Sanctuary River provides access to landscapes and wildlife encounters that define the Alaskan experience.
