About Sheep Camp

Sheep Camp is the last campground on the U.S. side of the trail before (at 13mi, 20.9km). As a result it is a popular campsite in the peak summer months and can be fully booked. Sheep Camp is the location of the National Park Service backcountry ranger station. Each evening a ranger will do a presentation in the campground providing an update on current trail conditions, tips for the trail, and some history of the area. You must purchase a permit to stay at this campground at the Trail Center i

Sheep Camp offers a unique Alaskan camping experience in one of the state's most historically significant and breathtakingly scenic regions. Located along the legendary Chilkoot Trail corridor, this public campground serves as an ideal basecamp for adventurers, hikers, and history enthusiasts looking to explore Alaska's gold rush heritage and pristine wilderness.

The surrounding landscape is quintessentially Alaskan, with towering mountain peaks, dense forests, and abundant wildlife viewing opportunities. The area's dramatic geography includes rugged alpine terrain and glaciated valleys that create some of the most stunning vistas in Southeast Alaska. Weather patterns can be variable and often cool, so visitors should come prepared with appropriate layering and rain gear. The remoteness of the location means you'll experience genuine solitude and an authentic connection to Alaska's wild character.

This region is particularly attractive to those interested in gold rush history. The Chilkoot Trail, one of North America's most famous hiking routes, winds through the surrounding mountains and valleys. The trail connects to historic gold rush communities and passes through terrain that thousands of prospectors traversed during the 1890s Klondike Gold Rush. Hikers of varying skill levels can explore day trips or undertake the full multi-day expedition, depending on their experience and ambitions.

For outdoor enthusiasts, the opportunities abound. Fishing, wildlife photography, mountaineering, and backcountry exploration are all possible from this location. The area supports populations of mountain goats, bears, eagles, and other Alaskan wildlife. Bird watchers will find the region particularly rewarding, especially during migration seasons.

Sheep Camp works well for travelers seeking an unplugged Alaskan adventure without extensive resort amenities. It appeals to hikers tackling the Chilkoot Trail, history buffs fascinated by gold rush narratives, photographers capturing wilderness imagery, and adventurers who measure their travels by experiences rather than creature comforts. This is camping at its most authentic, where the land itself becomes the primary attraction.
