About MENDENHALL CAMPGROUND

Federal campground in Alaska.

Nestled in the heart of Southeast Alaska's stunning Tongass National Forest, Mendenhall Campground offers RV travelers an unparalleled gateway to one of America's most pristine and dramatic landscapes. Located near Juneau, Alaska's capital city, this campground provides the perfect base for exploring the breathtaking natural wonders that define this remote corner of the state.

The campground sits in close proximity to the magnificent Mendenhall Glacier, one of Southeast Alaska's most iconic natural attractions. This massive river of ice flows from the Juneau Icefield and creates a landscape that seems almost otherworldly in its beauty. Visitors can hike to viewpoints that offer increasingly intimate perspectives of the glacier, watching as sunlight dances across its brilliant blue surfaces. The surrounding rainforest creates a lush, emerald backdrop that frames these glacial vistas perfectly, offering photography opportunities that will take your breath away at every turn.

This location is ideal for outdoor enthusiasts who crave adventure in a truly wild setting. The area offers exceptional opportunities for hiking, with trails ranging from easy walks suitable for families to challenging backcountry routes for experienced adventurers. Fishing enthusiasts will find excellent opportunities for both freshwater and saltwater fishing, with local waters teeming with salmon, halibut, and other species. Wildlife viewing is exceptional year-round, with possibilities to encounter brown bears, black bears, moose, eagles, and countless other Alaska natives in their natural habitat.

The surrounding Tongass National Forest provides endless exploration possibilities. Visitors can enjoy scenic drives through winding mountain roads, explore hidden coves and beaches accessible only by boat or floatplane, or simply sit back and absorb the raw natural beauty. The long summer daylight hours mean extended time for outdoor activities, while the winter months offer unique viewing opportunities for the northern lights.

Juneau itself, just a short drive away, offers supplies, restaurants, and cultural attractions. Whether you're seeking solitude in nature, adventure on remote trails, or a combination of both, Mendenhall Campground delivers an authentic Alaska RV experience that will stay with you long after you've returned home.

Campground had a nice distance between each camping space, so I felt like we have privacy. Then within walking distance is the Mendenhall river. The water, the sky, and surrounding nature were gorgeous.

Though there are many campsites, each is well-spaced with trees and greenery providing privacy and a peaceful atmosphere. The air is crisp, the nearby trails are inviting, and the sound of a flowing creek adds to the serenity. Whether you’re hiking, relaxing by the fire, or simply taking in the views, it’s the perfect mix of wilderness and comfort for campers who value both scenery and seclusion.
