About POLK CAMP

Federal campground in Alaska.

Polk Camp offers RV travelers a genuine taste of Alaska's wild interior, nestled within the national forest system where pristine wilderness meets accessible camping. This national forest campground serves as an ideal basecamp for adventurers seeking to explore one of America's most remote and magnificent regions without sacrificing basic camping infrastructure.

The location provides an authentic Alaskan experience that appeals to self-reliant travelers who appreciate the rugged beauty of the Last Frontier. You'll find yourself surrounded by dense boreal forest, with opportunities to disconnect from the everyday world and reconnect with nature at a fundamental level. The quietude of the national forest setting offers a stark contrast to developed RV parks, giving you that genuine wilderness camping feeling that draws many to Alaska in the first place.

For outdoor enthusiasts, the surrounding area presents abundant possibilities. Hiking trails wind through the forest landscape, offering chances to encounter Alaska's diverse wildlife in their natural habitat. The national forest designation means you're camping in a protected area managed for both conservation and recreation, ensuring the landscape remains relatively unspoiled. Fishing opportunities abound for those interested in pursuing local species, with various water access points within reasonable distances.

The camp's location serves travelers heading to or returning from deeper Alaskan adventures, or those using it as a base for day trips and extended explorations of the interior. The national forest setting means you're far from the hustle of developed tourism areas, yet still have the organizational structure and basic services that make RV camping manageable.

This campground appeals particularly to experienced RV travelers, outdoor enthusiasts, and those seeking authentic Alaska experiences over commercial resort-style camping. If you're drawn to self-sufficiency, natural beauty, and the genuine spirit of Alaskan camping, Polk Camp delivers exactly that kind of experience. The substantial visitor ratings reflect a community of campers who appreciate what this national forest location offers.

Great central location. Only problem is it’s a tourist town and seasonally operated so I understand money must be stretched. It’s showing its age, showers and bathroom are pretty dingy, overall grounds are just meh. Location was great though. Never communicated with a person, reservation was completed online while they were on break. Easy enough. Would return.

We stayed here in an RV. It is overpriced for what it offers. There is 1 shower in the womens bathroom, bonus is that it is free, however the bathroom smells pretty awful (damp/sewagy). No lighting around the campsite pathways. No picnic benches at the pitches. Pictures show that it is by the water but it is actually next to a boat yard (but the bonus is that it is only a short walk to the water).... We stayed here in an RV. We stayed here for three nights and here's the scoop: 1) The location is very convenient to Skagway and all the activities; 2) plan on it being noisy with the train, cruise ships coming into port, and lots of people coming and going from the ships; 3) there's not much privacy but a few of the sites do have decent shade; 4) the bathrooms are ok but could and should be cleaned more frequently. The location is absolutely excellent, cannot fault it! However, there is no laundry facilities here even though it advertises it and there is no WiFi that you can pay for. Also it would be nice to have picnic tables. It is very expensive for what you get. The showers and toilets need cleaning more regularly too.

We had a pleasant 2 day stay here. Nice location right down by the port. Walk to everything. Some trees in site which is nice. Bathroom/shower (single) is OK. No picnic tables at sites. You will hear the train all day (didn’t mind it) and ships coming in during the wee hours (also don’t mind). If you need a clear sky for Starlink stay at Garden City instead; it’s much more open to the sky. D... We had a pleasant 2 day stay here. Nice location right down by the port. Walk to everything. Most of the laundry machines are broken. 1 dryer operational with a long line of damp clothes waiting. They should not advertise laundry facilities if they are effectively unusable. Zero stars to the owners for this. 😠
