About RUSSIAN RIVER

Federal campground in Alaska.

Nestled in the heart of Alaska's pristine wilderness, Russian River offers an unparalleled camping experience for those seeking to immerse themselves in one of the Last Frontier's most spectacular natural settings. This national forest destination provides RV travelers with direct access to some of Alaska's most iconic landscapes and outdoor adventures, making it an ideal base for exploring the region's remarkable beauty and abundant wildlife.

The Russian River area is renowned for its exceptional salmon fishing opportunities, drawing anglers from around the world during peak seasons. The river itself is a stunning waterway that carves through dense spruce and hemlock forests, creating a dramatic backdrop for your camping experience. Whether you're an experienced fly fisherman or simply enjoy watching the remarkable salmon runs that characterize this region, the river offers something special throughout the season. The sight of bears fishing in the rapids is a quintessential Alaskan experience that many visitors find unforgettable.

Beyond fishing, the surrounding national forest provides endless exploration opportunities. Hiking trails range from gentle forest walks to more challenging backcountry routes, all offering chances to encounter diverse wildlife and experience the raw beauty of Alaska's interior. Birdwatchers will find the area particularly rewarding, with numerous species inhabiting the forest and waterways. The long daylight hours during summer months mean extended time for outdoor pursuits, from early morning hikes to evening wildlife observation sessions.

The camping experience here connects you directly to Alaska's outdoor heritage. You'll be surrounded by the sounds of the forest, the flow of the river, and the calls of eagles overhead. This is the Alaska that many dream of experiencing, where civilization feels pleasantly distant and the natural world takes center stage. The national forest setting provides a more rustic, authentic camping experience compared to developed RV parks, appealing to travelers who value wilderness immersion and self-sufficiency.

The area's remote location means you'll want to come prepared, but that very remoteness is precisely what makes Russian River so special. This is a destination for serious outdoor enthusiasts, nature lovers, and anyone wanting to experience Alaska's true wilderness character.

This is a great park in a great location. If you hit the salmon run at the right time you can be right in the middle of the action without having to fight as much for parking. We missed the run by a few weeks, but loved our stay. We have a 44’ fifth wheel and the loops are too tight for our trailer. But we reserved a site right at the entrance to the loop and were able to get in with a little effo... This is a great park in a great location. Sites are wooded, with lots of room between each one. Staff is friendly and knowledgeable. Very well maintained trails. Easy steps down to the river. Beautiful views in every direction. Fishing is great! Bonus: you might see a bear or two.

I tried to hike the Russian River Falls Trail. The hike was just to hard for my old knees. I wanted to see the bears feeding on sockeye salmon at the falls, they did report about a week earlier bears were there.
