About Starrigavan Campground and Day Use

Federal campground in Alaska.

Nestled in the heart of Southeast Alaska's Tongass National Forest, Starrigavan Campground offers an authentic wilderness experience for RV enthusiasts seeking to explore one of America's most pristine and untamed regions. Located near Sitka, this national forest campground serves as an ideal base for discovering the natural wonders of Alaska's Inside Passage, where temperate rainforests meet dramatic coastal landscapes.

The campground provides access to some of the region's most spectacular outdoor recreation opportunities. Anglers will find excellent fishing prospects in nearby streams and coastal waters, where salmon and other fish species thrive in Alaska's cold, clean waters. Hikers can explore numerous trails that wind through old-growth forests, offering encounters with Alaska's diverse wildlife including bears, eagles, and deer. The area's natural beauty shifts dramatically with the seasons, from the lush greenery of summer to the moody, atmospheric conditions of spring and fall when fewer visitors experience the region's quieter character.

Sitka, one of Alaska's most historically significant communities, lies within easy reach of the campground. This charming town blends Russian colonial heritage with Native Tlingit culture, featuring historic landmarks, museums, and galleries that tell the story of Alaska's rich past. The town's vibrant arts scene, excellent restaurants, and local shops provide welcome amenities for those wanting to venture beyond the campground.

The surrounding Tongass National Forest encompasses nearly 17 million acres of pristine wilderness, making it one of the largest national forests in the country. Whether you're seeking solitude in nature, adventure on hiking trails, or opportunities to witness Alaska's incredible wildlife in their natural habitat, this region delivers unforgettable experiences. The long daylight hours during summer months allow extended exploration time, while the dramatic seasonal changes create different but equally rewarding experiences throughout the year.

This destination appeals to travelers who appreciate raw natural beauty, outdoor recreation, and the chance to experience Alaska's wilderness character from the comfort of their RV. It's perfect for those seeking to escape crowded tourist areas and discover authentic Alaskan adventure.

Caveat, I didn’t camp here, although I wish I did. I just walked through after hiking Mosquito Cove. Lovely camp sites and day use areas. Very tasty water from artesian well.

Beautiful campground. Well maintained. Camp hosts onsite. Running water. They keep the restrooms really clean. Lots of shady trees. I get a little cell service in the campground. For some reason my hotspot works fine here.
