About Fort Tuthill Campground

Campground in Arizona.

Fort Tuthill Campground offers a wonderful high-elevation camping experience in the heart of Arizona's mountain country, situated in Coconino County near Flagstaff. At over 7,000 feet elevation, this public campground provides a refreshing escape from the heat of lower Arizona, making it an ideal destination for travelers seeking cooler temperatures and stunning natural scenery throughout the year.

The campground's location places you in one of Arizona's most versatile outdoor recreation regions. Flagstaff itself is a vibrant mountain town with excellent dining, shopping, and cultural attractions, yet the campground maintains a peaceful, natural setting just minutes away from town conveniences. The surrounding Coconino National Forest provides endless opportunities for hiking, mountain biking, fishing, and wildlife viewing. Whether you're interested in exploring scenic forest trails or simply enjoying the crisp mountain air, the area delivers experiences that appeal to both active adventurers and those seeking relaxation.

Fort Tuthill Campground serves as an excellent base for exploring some of Arizona's most iconic destinations. The Grand Canyon's South Rim is within reasonable driving distance, making it possible to visit one of the world's natural wonders and return to your comfortable campsite each evening. Additionally, the nearby San Francisco Peaks offer spectacular views and outdoor recreation opportunities that attract visitors from across the country. Sunset Crater and Wupatki National Monuments are also accessible for day trips, providing opportunities to explore volcanic landscapes and ancient Native American ruins.

The campground appeals to a wide range of travelers. Families appreciate the safe, well-maintained environment and proximity to both outdoor activities and town amenities. Retirees often choose Fort Tuthill for extended stays during the warmer months, enjoying the pleasant weather and slower pace. Outdoor enthusiasts value the location's access to hiking trails, fishing opportunities, and natural forest surroundings. The elevation and mountain setting make it particularly popular during summer months when lower desert areas become too hot for comfortable camping.

The area's natural beauty changes throughout the seasons, offering distinct experiences depending on when you visit. Summer brings cool mountain temperatures and lush forest greenery, while fall offers spectacular aspen and pine colors. Even winter camping is possible at this elevation for those with proper equipment, creating a unique experience of snow-covered landscapes and quiet forest solitude.

Lovely campground surrounded by many tall Ponderosa pine trees. I felt close to nature and the camp host was really friendly. I took 1 star off because they didn’t have electrical hook up. Most of the sites are dry/primitive, there are limited sites with water and sewer hookups. Many cute squirrels roaming around, and the location was far enough from the freeway, but still very accessible to it. W... Lovely campground surrounded by many tall Ponderosa pine trees. Unique campground. Very close campsites, no power, great camp hosts. Porta potties only. Great for a weekend exploring Flagstaff. Two nights of Rave music is one night too many. Concert next door was not conducive to camping. One night is tolerable. Two is too much. Please stop.

This is a very nice campground with lots of spaces and lots of big pine trees. Great for tent camping, and some spots are big enough for RVs. There are potable water spickets throughout as well as porta potties and trash cans. Some spaces are very big, and some are VERY small, so if you have an RV, call ahead and ask which spaces will work for you. Another bonus, it's near Flagstaff!

If you’re tent camping and enjoy nature sounds, this may not be the place for you. The sites are pretty close together and while they have some rules about “amplified sounds” there were some dubstep enthusiasts who used a few JBL type speakers on and off during the day and there as also a guy cooking with what looked to be a blowtorch and sounded like a high powered fan. There is also an “extreme obstacle ropes course” which consists of a powered zip line that runs right through the camp and makes a decent amount of noise. Bathrooms are porta potties. When I arrived they were under a fire ban meaning only propane grills which worked for us. Because the camp sites were super close together, we also got some second hand weed smoke even though smoking was also prohibited according to the camp host. Overall we had a great time and the noise didn’t bother us because my 3 kids made plenty of their own noise before quiet hours and in the morning. Since we were on Texas time, the only downside for us was trying to keep everyone quiet until 7a (9 our time). We loved it. 10/10 for us, would stay again.

We stayed at the campground for 2 nights in our 28 foot RV pulling a 10 foot motorcycle trailer. Had a great experience there. The hosts were very friendly and helpful, the campsite was large and clean. We thought we were getting a pull-through site and it wasn’t, but was large enough to easily back up and pull out. Very quiet at night. We would stay there again.
