About Fossil Creek

Campground in Arizona.

Nestled in the scenic high country of central Arizona, Fossil Creek Public Campground offers RV enthusiasts and tent campers alike a chance to experience some of the state's most pristine natural beauty. Located in the Coconino National Forest, this campground serves as an excellent base for exploring one of Arizona's hidden gems—Fossil Creek itself, a rare free-flowing stream in the desert that remains largely undeveloped and wonderfully remote.

The campground sits at elevation, providing relief from Arizona's intense summer heat and creating a more temperate climate perfect for outdoor recreation. The surrounding landscape features classic Arizona high desert scenery with juniper and ponderosa pine forests, rocky outcroppings, and stunning vistas. The area's natural springs and flowing water make it exceptional for those accustomed to the arid conditions elsewhere in the state. This water source has shaped the region's ecology for thousands of years and continues to draw visitors seeking authentic Arizona wilderness.

Fossil Creek itself is the main attraction, famous among hikers and nature lovers for its turquoise pools, small waterfalls, and riparian vegetation that creates a lush canyon environment. The creek hike is accessible from the campground area and offers opportunities to cool off in the water, explore travertine deposits, and spot wildlife including beavers, mule deer, and various bird species. The seven-mile round trip hike is moderately challenging but rewards visitors with some of Arizona's most photogenic natural features.

The campground appeals to those seeking a more primitive camping experience away from the hustle and bustle of developed resort-style RV parks. It's ideal for travelers who appreciate quiet nights under Arizona's star-filled skies, morning hikes through forest terrain, and the peaceful sound of flowing water. Whether you're a full-time RVer exploring Arizona's natural areas, a family seeking adventure, or a retiree looking for peaceful outdoor recreation, Fossil Creek offers an authentic high desert camping experience that showcases why Arizona's national forests deserve exploration.

It was amazing the river was so blue and we got lucky to park in lot 1. The hike to the waterfall wasn't bad and people of all ages were capable of doing it. The road is all dirt to get there and is 17 miles long so be prepared for that but we did see cars doing it. If you swim under the waterfall there is a little place you can sit back there it's definitely worth checking out

During the permit months do make sure to book near the time of posting (8am Arizona Time, month prior) if you want a shot at getting a close parking lot! My first go around I lucked out and got lot 2. I give MAJOR kudos to those that get further lots as there is absolutely zero shade walking from those lots to the trail. We went on a Thursday, from the top at the entrance to the lot took approximately 40 minutes driving to our lot. The road looks fantastic after being redone. However be cautious they are VERY tight turns. Don’t be rude trying to take up the whole road. We got in pretty early and enjoyed a few hours lounging In the large pool. Overall I would say it was a very mild hike, just be cautious of all the lizards and potential snakes hiding in the bushes. Not a ton of sun coverage though so being lots of water and sunscreen. Took about 30 minutes in and 30 minutes out. We will definitely be returning!

Very cool place to visit. If you are not interested in going there to cool off in the summer, try visiting on off-season. Went there in February, and there were only about fifteen visitors. During the off-season, there is no need for a permit.

WARNING! There is a 17 mile dirt road to get to the trail. You will be driving slow, it will be dusty, and you will get shaken up. Once you get there, you can go left or right to get to your parking spot. I picked Dixon Lewis trailhead because it's closest to the falls. Nice easy hike. Beautiful water. In April the water was cold but still fun.
