This is an easy scramble down Monument Creek from the Monument Creek Campground on the Tonto Trail (pictured). The Hermit Trail is the easiest of the un-maintained trails, and was probably once the best trail in the Canyon (e.g., the upper stretches are hand-laid stairs). Making a loop between the Hermit and Bright Angel is a nice 1-2 night hike for most people. Reservations required, of course.... For a raft trip, though, you'd be better hiking at one of the endless places that you simply can't get to except from the Colorado River.

Our rafts took a lunch break here at Granite Camp. From the rafts you can walk down a get a good view of the Granite Rapids which are spectacular. I was able to climb to an overlook, just in time to see a raft coming down the rapids. This is a very good stopping point.
