Nestled in the remote beauty of southwestern Arizona, Kofa Wilderness offers RV campers a genuine escape into one of the state's most pristine natural landscapes. Located near Tierra Verde, this public campground serves as your gateway to exploring the rugged Kofa National Wildlife Refuge, a 665,400-acre sanctuary that feels worlds away from civilization despite being accessible by vehicle.

The terrain around Kofa Wilderness showcases the distinctive character of the Sonoran Desert at its most dramatic. Towering volcanic peaks, including the notable Kofa Mountain, rise dramatically against brilliant blue skies, while desert washes wind through landscapes dotted with desert bighorn sheep, mule deer, and an impressive array of bird species. The refuge was actually established specifically to protect the desert bighorn sheep population, making it a premier destination for wildlife enthusiasts and photographers seeking authentic desert experiences.

For RV travelers, the location offers exceptional opportunities for outdoor exploration at varying difficulty levels. Hiking trails range from accessible desert walks to more challenging mountain routes that reward effort with expansive vistas across the Kofa range. Many visitors are drawn to the chance of spotting desert bighorn sheep in their natural habitat, particularly during early morning or late afternoon excursions. Birdwatchers find the refuge exceptional, with numerous species including golden eagles, Harris hawks, and various desert songbirds making appearances throughout the year.

The surrounding region provides a sense of true remoteness while still offering practical access. The visitor center and headquarters at 9300 East 28th Street serves as an excellent starting point for planning your stay, offering information about seasonal conditions, trail maps, and refuge regulations. Nearby Yuma, about an hour's drive away, provides essential services including groceries, fuel, and dining options for those needing supplies.

This destination appeals particularly to travelers seeking solitude, natural beauty, and wildlife experiences. Whether you're an avid hiker, bird watcher, photographer, or simply someone seeking peace and quiet under star-filled skies, Kofa Wilderness delivers an authentic desert camping experience that reconnects you with the natural world.
