About Las Cienegas National Conservation Area - Entrance

Campground in Arizona.

Nestled in the high desert landscape of southern Arizona, Las Cienegas National Conservation Area offers RV campers a remarkable escape into one of the region's most ecologically significant and visually stunning environments. Located along East Empire Ranch Road, this public campground serves as the gateway to exploring a conservation area that protects crucial desert wetlands and riparian corridors in the San Pedro Valley.

The terrain surrounding the campground presents a fascinating blend of desert ecology and natural water features that make this location truly special. The conservation area encompasses several cienegas, which are rare desert wetlands that support an incredible diversity of plant and animal life. Travelers who choose to stay here find themselves in a landscape that shifts between open grasslands, cottonwood groves, and desert scrubland, creating a dynamic backdrop for their camping experience.

For outdoor enthusiasts, the opportunities here are exceptional. Hiking trails wind through the conservation area, allowing visitors to explore riparian zones where water creates pockets of lush vegetation in the otherwise arid landscape. Birdwatchers particularly treasure this destination, as the diverse habitats attract numerous species throughout the year. The presence of permanent water sources in a desert environment makes this area a critical habitat that draws wildlife watchers and nature photographers from across the country.

The location offers easy access to southern Arizona's rich cultural and historical heritage. The nearby mining towns and ranching communities provide a glimpse into the region's past, while the high desert setting delivers those classic Arizona vistas that make the state so captivating. The elevation here provides relief from the intense summer heat found in lower desert regions, making spring, fall, and winter particularly pleasant times to visit.

This public campground appeals to travelers seeking authentic desert experiences without excessive development or crowds. Whether you're interested in wildlife observation, hiking, photography, or simply immersing yourself in pristine natural surroundings, Las Cienegas provides an authentic Arizona camping adventure that celebrates conservation and natural beauty.

Call it 3.75 stars rounded up based on a winter holidays visit. Not a bad place. Did not see any of the pronghorns advertised here, and shooting on birds was a struggle, with an 80-90 percent overcast slate gray sky after the sunrise hinted at sun. Might have spent more time there with better light, and allowing for this being an initial "sampling" trip of just over half a day. I did see several... Did not see any of the pronghorns advertised here, and shooting on birds was a struggle, with an 80-90 percent overcast slate gray sky after the sunrise hinted at sun. Might have spent more time there with better light, and allowing for this being an initial "sampling" trip of just over half a day. I did see several Gila woodpeckers as well as the ladderbacks, a few quail, scads of zebraheads and butterbutt warblers and more, such as the black phoebe on Oak Creek. The old Empire Ranch stuff was decently interesting. The biggest concern of warmer-weather visiting, were I here at another time of year, would be the amount of ATV traffic I suspect this place often gets. There was enough of that on the day I was here, and I had seen plenty the day before in lower elevations to the southwest. So with that, while this place is probably even more decent in spring and fall, it's surely not a 5-star place.

I came here to spend some time away from town with my wife and dog to scope out the area. We came out to work on training and she had a blast. There’s tons of trails for hiking and mountain biking. Make sure you wear high tops or boots to combat brush getting in your shoes. Some of the roads are washed out so bring a vehicle with enough clearance for certain areas. We’re definitely gonna come back... I came here to spend some time away from town with my wife and dog to scope out the area. We came out to work on training and she had a blast. Quiet boondocking spot an hour or so Southeast of Tucson AZ. Not a lot of sites, but some are spread out enough that you cannot see your neighbor. Far enough from any roads that it can be very peaceful. Quail, Prairie dogs, coyote calling in the distance, and cows are the main animals we observed. Lots of dispersed camping, if you wander around. water at historic ranch says it's not potable.
