About North Rim Campground

Campground in Arizona.

Perched at over 8,000 feet elevation on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, North Rim Campground offers one of the most spectacular and remote camping experiences in Arizona. This public campground provides access to one of the world's most iconic natural wonders, yet remains far less crowded than its South Rim counterpart, making it a paradise for travelers seeking solitude and authentic wilderness connection.

The North Rim sits on the Colorado Plateau's northern edge, creating a dramatically different ecosystem from the more visited South Rim. The cooler elevation means pleasant summer temperatures even when lower elevations bake in intense heat. Towering ponderosa pines, Douglas firs, and aspen trees surround the campground, providing natural shade and a refreshing mountain atmosphere. The forest setting feels worlds away from desert stereotypes, offering relief and comfort during your stay.

What truly sets this location apart is the unparalleled access to the Grand Canyon's less-explored northern landscape. The North Rim's vistas reveal different geological layers and perspectives than the South Rim, with stunning viewpoints like Bright Angel Point, Cape Royal, and Point Imperial offering breathtaking photo opportunities and inspiring hikes. The Colorado River views from various overlooks are simply magnificent, and the quieter trails mean you're more likely to enjoy these natural wonders without crowds.

Beyond the canyon itself, the surrounding Kaibab Plateau offers excellent hiking, wildlife viewing, and stargazing opportunities. The night sky here is exceptionally clear, making it perfect for astronomy enthusiasts. The remote location means minimal light pollution and incredible dark skies for contemplating the cosmos.

This campground works wonderfully for travelers seeking a true escape from busy tourist areas, families who want to explore one of America's greatest natural treasures, and outdoor enthusiasts ready for adventure. The North Rim operates seasonally, typically mid-May through mid-October, making summer visits ideal. Whether you're drawn by the canyon's majesty, the mountain forest setting, or simply the desire for peaceful, uncrowded camping, North Rim Campground delivers an unforgettable Arizona experience that creates lasting memories.

I've camped here a couple times and hope it gets rebuilt and reopened soon. The air is cooler up there in the summer. The views are amazing. The Lodge's den and porches (the most amazing view at sunset I've ever seen) was also open to campers.

The best mistake was thinking these were privative campgrounds - only to find out they are fully functioning after the spring open date! Temps were still very cool at night (29F one night) but laundry, showers, potable water were all available in addition to firewood and other supplies at the General Store ... And a nearby full service gas station that provided fuel for normal prices. Lovely hikin... Very bad experience. We reached late at around 10 pm. Then we set up our tent, cooked some food and played light music to have some drinks and fun. We were not aware of the quiet time rule. We were not aware of the quiet time rule. At 1 am someone comes and threatens us to take to jail as we were making noise and tells he is a police officer. Disappointed, We stopped our party and went to the tent. At 8 am some lady is shouting near our tent asking us to clean our mess and calls us asshole. Then some old man comes and tells we should be ashamed of ourselves and threatens to ban us from national parks. We thought people will be lively and having fun but they were there to just sleep and cook food. If we disturbed anyone , somebody could have told us politely and we would have stopped right away. There is no view of Grand canyon too and the bathroom stinked. We left at 9 am itself. Horrible experience.

Tent camped at the campground. Tent areas are spacious, shaded, and offer "pull through" for your car. Restrooms are clean, wash sinks and potable water available. Very limited cell service. Very limited cell service. Camping areas are very quite, amazing views of the stars at night. Definitely pack bug spray! Stayed the first week of October, right before the season ends - temperature was perfect. Aspens were just turning so the drive in was super pretty. Saw lots of deer, foxes, ground squirrels. I recommend booking way in advance for tent sites as this is a very popular area. Camp store has coffee, wine/beer, snacks, ice, firewood, and other camping supplies for sale. Laundry and showers are available but you must pay for them. Showers are coin operated. North rim offers stunning views of the Grand canyon and has several handicap/ stroller compatible trails that are short walks and paved. Again, cannot stress how amazing the views are - not specifically from the campground; but the surrounding area and lodge.
