About Cochise Stronghold Campground

Campground in Arizona.

Nestled in the rugged Dragoon Mountains of southeastern Arizona, Cochise Stronghold Campground offers RV travelers an authentic desert camping experience steeped in history and natural beauty. This National Forest campground serves as a gateway to one of Arizona's most fascinating historical sites, where the Apache leader Cochise once led his people in resistance during the 1860s and 1870s. The dramatic landscape of towering granite peaks, deep canyons, and desert vegetation creates a striking backdrop for your camping adventure.

The campground itself provides a comfortable base for exploring this remarkable region. You'll find yourself surrounded by the kind of authentic Arizona wilderness that draws visitors seeking solitude and connection with the land. The area's elevation keeps temperatures reasonable even during hot months, and the varied terrain offers endless opportunities for outdoor recreation. Hiking trails wind through the surrounding forest and canyons, offering everything from gentle walks to more challenging treks with spectacular vistas.

The nearby town of Dragoon provides access to essential services and supplies, located just a short drive away. This charming area has long been a crossroads for travelers, and today it continues that tradition of welcoming visitors to explore southeastern Arizona's diverse attractions. The region's rich Apache heritage and frontier history are woven throughout the landscape, visible in the very rocks and canyons that define this corner of the state.

Cochise Stronghold itself is a must-visit destination for history enthusiasts and nature lovers alike. The historic sites tell the story of one of America's most significant Native American leaders and his people's struggle to preserve their way of life in this dramatic desert landscape. Whether you're interested in history, photography, hiking, or simply experiencing the raw beauty of the Arizona wilderness, this area delivers an unforgettable experience. Beautiful trees, rocks, trails, history! We were here after a good rain and the washes were flowing nicely! A couple of waterfalls coming through the rock walls. Just gorgeous.

Did y’all play Cowboys and Indians when you were little… Yeah, this is the place that you imagined would be a great hideout and it was….for a little awhile…read the sign. Dirt road going in and he will have to cross some streams to get to the base of the mountains.

A very beautiful place with huge rock mountains. The road in is a well-maintained dirt road, except for a couple of washboard areas.

Excellent lower use campground. The vault toilets are something of a different age (1950's) style of forest architecture. So no bidets here and because it is so remote the faculties are quite worn. Campsites are quite nice and you can pay by check or cash onsite at the entrance of the campground. There is a great set of displays featuring... Excellent lower use campground. There are several trails leading from here for the more adventuresome. Be extra careful with fire as this place has less maintenence to remove leaf litter which is highly flammable. We visited here May 2025.
