About Woods Canyon Lake Group

Federal campground in Arizona.

Nestled in the heart of Arizona's high country, Woods Canyon Lake Group offers a serene escape into nature for RV adventurers seeking authentic forest camping. This National Forest destination sits at elevation among towering pines and cool mountain air, providing a refreshing contrast to Arizona's desert landscape. The setting is ideal for those who want to experience the beauty of Arizona's forested regions without sacrificing access to excellent outdoor recreation.

The lake itself is the crown jewel of this area, offering visitors a stunning natural focal point for water-based activities and scenic appreciation. The clear waters and surrounding forest create an almost peaceful sanctuary where the pace of life slows down and the stresses of everyday living seem to fade away. Early mornings bring mist rising off the water, while evenings deliver spectacular sunset views framed by pine trees and rocky shores. This is the kind of place where families gather around campfires to share stories, where anglers test their skills in productive waters, and where nature enthusiasts find endless opportunities for exploration.

The elevation and forest environment make this an excellent choice for travelers escaping extreme heat, whether visiting during spring, summer, or early fall. The cooler temperatures and mountain scenery attract visitors from across Arizona and beyond who are seeking a different kind of Arizona experience. Wildlife viewing opportunities abound, and the surrounding National Forest provides countless hiking trails and scenic drives for those eager to stretch their legs and immerse themselves in the wilderness.

This location appeals particularly to families, fishing enthusiasts, nature photographers, and anyone who values peaceful forest camping over bustling commercial RV parks. The group camping designation makes it an excellent choice for larger parties, reunions, or group outings who want to share the camping experience together. Whether you're planning a weekend getaway or a longer mountain retreat, Woods Canyon Lake Group delivers that authentic National Forest camping experience Arizona visitors cherish.

I thoroughly enjoyed this campground. Clean restrooms, running water. If you enjoy walking, 0.5 mile up you go to the Woods Canyon Lake, rent a Kayak or Canoe, 1 mile down, you can see the Mogollon Rim. And if you like Showers, 15 minutes away (Canyon Point Campground) they have have showers. The Location is perfect, the hosts are nice and understanding, and it's very spacious. My dog had a blast... Huge group area! They weren't kidding when they said this site can accommodate 100 people. 1 set of bathrooms. Lots of picnic tables and a couple of grills in the communal area. There's 1 large fire ring next to the picnic area but each individual campsite has a fire ring as well. Super clean and private. The camphost (Bob and Charlotte) are awesome. The camphost (Bob and Charlotte) are awesome. They welcomed us and explained the rules and gave us some ideas for camping. We had a lot of kids in our group and they brought down some chalk for the kids to draw on the cement. Everyone had a great time. Well worth the money and we'll be back.

The vault toilets were by far the cleanest I have seen in any AZ National Forest Land in the past 20 years! There is plenty of shade in the individual campsites, but no cover/shelter in the central gathering area, so bring your Easy-Ups for a little mid-day shade. Didn’t bother us, though, as we spent the peak time of the day down by the lake! Best night ever for statgazing.
