About Mather Campground

Experience the great outdoors at Mather Campground, a well-regarded national park campground near Grand Canyon, Arizona. With 319 available sites, it offers excellent camping opportunities for families and adventurers alike.

Mather Campground stands as one of the most accessible and well-appointed camping destinations within Grand Canyon National Park, offering visitors an exceptional base for exploring one of the world's most iconic natural wonders. Located on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, this year-round facility welcomes RV travelers and tent campers alike, making it an ideal choice for families and outdoor enthusiasts seeking an immersive national park experience without sacrificing essential comforts.

With 319 sites spread across a spacious woodland setting, Mather Campground provides ample opportunity to find your perfect camping spot among the ponderosa pines and juniper trees that characterize the high desert plateau. The campground's elevation of around 7,000 feet creates a distinctly different climate from the canyon floor, offering cooler temperatures and refreshing mountain air that make camping enjoyable even during summer months. Whether you're visiting during the vibrant wildflower seasons of spring and early summer, the comfortable warmth of autumn, or the crisp clarity of winter when snow occasionally dusts the landscape, there's something special about each season at this location.

The practical amenities make extended stays comfortable and convenient. Full restroom facilities and shower houses are strategically located throughout the campground, dump stations are available for RV waste management, and fire rings at many sites allow for traditional campfire experiences under Arizona's expansive starry skies. Picnic tables provide designated spaces for meals and gathering, while the pet-friendly policy means your furry companions can join your adventure.

Beyond the campground itself, the South Rim offers unparalleled opportunities for exploring the Grand Canyon's majesty. Multiple viewpoints showcase the canyon's vast geological layers and shifting light throughout the day. Hiking trails range from easy rim walks to challenging descents into the canyon itself, accommodating all fitness levels. The park's visitor center provides education about the canyon's geology, Native American history, and ecology. Fishing enthusiasts will appreciate access to the Colorado River and tributary streams for trout fishing opportunities.

This location appeals to a wide range of travelers: geology buffs fascinated by the exposed rock formations spanning nearly two billion years of Earth's history, photographers seeking dramatic landscapes and golden hour lighting, families wanting to create lasting memories in nature, and anyone seeking to witness the humbling scale and beauty of the Grand Canyon. Whether you spend a few days or extend your stay for weeks, Mather Campground serves as your gateway to one of America's most treasured natural landscapes.

By some random streak of luck (as of 11/4/2025), Mather Campground is WIDE OPEN. Normally you need to book 6 months in advance but due to the government shutdown (sorry park rangers) the ground was closed and then reopened. We went 10/31-11/2 and the bathrooms were stocked, water was still running, and there was no park entrance fee. These are flushable bathrooms with lights, sinks, and soap. Big... Big trash dumpsters are nearby for safely throwing away trash. This campground is also right next to the south rim trail! We stayed at 170, a short walk to the bathrooms but still private and beautiful. I recommended doing the Trail of Time for an easy walk around the rim. It’ll be very cold at night (around 30 degrees) but warm in the sun during the day. Grandview Point is fabulous for sunrise + sunset views. You can go to mather point at night for some awesome stargazing!

Nice spots in the forest. We had a Rocky Mountains Elk approaching us at just 15 meters. Walking distance to the free shuttle system. A dump station available at the Park entrance. Recommend this place.

Good shower facilities and comfort station. The elderly NPS staff member who checked me in seemed slightly grumpy or at least not exactly welcoming. Seemed like there was a recognition missing that the S in NPS is for service, and absent tourists, his job would not exist. I had the same impression / experience with the staff member working at the west gate when I arrived.

I have camped at many national parks but this was the worst. There’s RV and tent camping mixed in same lot. So there’s always someone with RV arriving at middle of night. Additionally this site is next to a main road. So there’s always vehicle movement noise. On top of these, my lot was close to the campground main access road. So there was always vehicle movements and it felt like sleeping on... I have camped at many national parks but this was the worst. There’s RV and tent camping mixed in same lot. Plus $30 per night for an empty flat ground is a massive ripoff.
