About Catalina State Park

Located near Tucson, Arizona, Catalina State Park features 120 campsites in a scenic setting. This state park is a favorite among visitors seeking outdoor adventure and relaxation.

Nestled in the foothills north of Tucson, Catalina State Park offers RV campers a remarkable desert sanctuary where rugged natural beauty meets accessible outdoor recreation. This 5,500-acre park sits at the gateway to the stunning Santa Catalina Mountains, providing visitors with an ideal basecamp for exploring one of Arizona's most scenic regions. With 120 well-maintained sites spread throughout the property, the park welcomes RV enthusiasts year-round, making it an excellent destination whether you're escaping winter cold or enjoying Arizona's mild shoulder seasons.

The landscape here is quintessential Sonoran Desert, with saguaro cacti standing like sentinels across rolling terrain, dramatic rock formations, and panoramic views of the mountains beyond. The park's elevation of around 2,600 feet provides relief from the intense summer heat of lower elevations, and the cooler temperatures make it particularly appealing during Arizona's extended fall and spring seasons. The natural setting creates a sense of genuine wilderness adventure while remaining conveniently located just 30 minutes north of Tucson's amenities and services.

Catalina State Park is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts of all types. The park features excellent hiking trails ranging from easy nature walks to challenging mountain routes, with popular options including the Romero Canyon Trail and the Sutherland Trail, both offering stunning vistas and opportunities to spot native wildlife like javelina, coyotes, and numerous bird species. Water recreation is also central to the park's appeal, with boating available on the scenic waterway and fishing opportunities for those interested in casting a line. The park's boat ramp provides easy water access, making it perfect for RVers who enjoy bringing watercraft along.

Picnicking and relaxation are equally important parts of the Catalina experience. Scattered picnic tables throughout the park offer perfect spots for meals with mountain views, while fire rings provide gathering spaces for evening campfires under Arizona's star-filled skies. The facilities support comfortable camping with full restrooms and shower facilities available, along with convenient dump stations for RV waste management. Pet-friendly policies mean your furry companions can enjoy the adventure alongside you.

Tucson itself is a vibrant city rich in history, culture, and cuisine. Within a short drive, RV campers can explore downtown Tucson's galleries and restaurants, visit the world-renowned Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, or discover historic Spanish missions like San Xavier del Bac. The city offers excellent shopping, diverse dining options, and cultural attractions while still allowing campers to maintain their peaceful retreat in nature.

Catalina State Park particularly appeals to nature lovers, hiking enthusiasts, retirees seeking peaceful winter getaways, and families wanting to introduce children to desert camping. Those interested in photography will find endless opportunities to capture desert landscapes and wildlife. Birders appreciate the park's location along migration routes and the diversity of species visible throughout the year.

Absolutely love this State Park. It has it all for the adventures. So many hikes to pick from, for all fitness levels. Mountain biking trails. It's in a lush beautiful area oasis, but only short drive to all the aminaties Tuscon offers. A trip to the Biosphere 2 was great!! A drive up Mount Lemmon Hwy is incredible. So much to see and do.... Loved it, we will be back.

February 2026 - People get pretty excited about this State Park. Hiking and scenery is excellent! Spacious campsites and quiet? Go “anywhere” else. This State Park calls the Ringtail Camping Loop “Rustic” - I call it BS!!! Ringtail is a dirt overflow lot period. Campers packed in like sardines in a can. Shame on Catalina. You should remove half the sites in Ringtail and manage it. Another example... February 2026 - People get pretty excited about this State Park. Hiking and scenery is excellent! Generators allowed 8am-8pm!!! People start the generators early and the hosts do nothing. The exhaust stinks and the noise is obnoxious. The retirees love this campground because restaurants, Walmart and Petco are across the street (Oracle) LOL. We have traveled a LOT. This is not our idea of camping. Again, hiking is beautiful, just know what you are booking.

Clean facilities, easy parking, and help staff and volunteers at this park. I also appreciate the dog-friendliness. I love the variety of well-maintained trails that offer different levels of difficulty, length, and elevation gain. I spent about three hours in the park hiking with my dog.

This is a really nice park . It’s close to lots of hiking and biking trails there are lots of trees. The spots are large with plenty of privacy. Relax and cut loose for a while. The bathrooms are nice and clean. There is a shopping center with Walmart, movie theater and restaurants right across the street. And Tucson only a few minutes down the road. There is wildlife wondering through your camps... This is a really nice park . It’s close to lots of hiking and biking trails there are lots of trees. The spots are large with plenty of privacy.
