About Bodega Dunes Campground

Campground in California.

Bodega Dunes Campground offers a remarkable coastal camping experience on California's stunning Sonoma Coast, where redwood forests meet dramatic ocean vistas. Located along Highway 1 near the charming town of Bodega Bay, this public campground provides the perfect base for exploring one of the Pacific Coast's most beautiful and unspoiled regions.

The campground itself sits in a setting that captures the essence of California's wild coast. Campers wake to the sound of ocean waves and enjoy immediate access to some of the area's most pristine beaches and coastal trails. The proximity to the water means you'll experience the natural rhythm of tidal cycles and observe abundant coastal wildlife throughout your stay. The setting is ideal for those seeking authentic coastal beauty without the hustle and bustle of overcrowded tourist destinations.

Bodega Bay is a working fishing village with considerable character and charm. The town offers excellent seafood restaurants where you can enjoy fresh-caught catches, local shops, and galleries that showcase the region's artistic community. The nearby Bodega Head provides outstanding hiking opportunities with panoramic ocean views, tide pools to explore, and opportunities for whale watching during migration seasons. For history enthusiasts, the famous filming locations from Alfred Hitchcock's "The Birds" are located nearby, adding an intriguing cultural element to your visit.

The broader region is a nature lover's paradise. Point Reyes National Seashore lies just south, offering world-class hiking, pristine beaches, and lighthouse visits. The Sonoma Coast State Beach system provides miles of dramatic shoreline perfect for exploring, photography, and simple contemplation. Wine country is also within reach, making this an excellent base for those interested in combining coastal exploration with wine tasting in renowned vineyards.

This location appeals to RV travelers seeking authentic coastal experiences, outdoor enthusiasts wanting access to quality hiking and natural attractions, photographers drawn to dramatic landscapes, and anyone looking to escape crowded tourist areas. The moderate climate allows for year-round camping, though the summer months and early fall typically offer the most stable weather.

Love this campground. There aren’t really any bad camping sites, with a lot of good ones, and few exceptional ones. The only downside is that some sites are near a road; if you’re a light sleeper, that might wake you. But so will the sea lions as they occasionally bark in the early morning.

Though this campground is adjacent to Bodega Bay (with no direct access) and about a 1.2+mile walk or bike ride or drive to Bodega Dunes Beach (depending on your campsite) via the park road, it's still a nice place to stay and a convenient location to nearby town and other places to explore. My camper van is "self-contained" - so I cannot comment on condition of toilet facilities, but they were apparently part of scheduled renovations for the campground. Bodega Dunes Campground may not be the most popular first pick for some campers in Sonoma Coast State Park, but I like it.

Great campsite, short drive to beaches that allow dogs, bathrooms were clean enough. Taking off two stars because of the fog horn that blares every 10 seconds. Bring earplugs or prepare for a lot of interrupted sleep if you're tent camping.

We've camped here many years in a row and loved camping here, but its going downhill and needs some attention by the State. Its close to many things in Bodega Bay and sheltered from the wind which is great. Most of the sites are pretty nice with good facilities in the past. We usually like the loop that has sites 23-49, however in October 2024, when we camped here the bathrooms in that loop were under construction. It was annoying to have to go all the way to the other loops to shower and use the restroom. There were porta potty bathrooms in the loop but those are not the same. We booked the same sites 6 months out again for Labor Day weekend 2025 and were shocked when those restrooms are still under re-construction and looked like there was no progress made. I know government work is slow, but this is ridiculous. Over labor day weekend, many of the camp sites had way more than 6 people camping per site, with no enforcement by staff. Many camp sites had 4-5 cars in them. This led to lines and crowding at the bathrooms and showers that were still open. Luckily we had our bikes but it was still a haul to go to the other loops and porta potties were used up and gross early in the weekend. We were pretty disappointed this time around and not sure we'll be back. We might camp in the county campgrounds instead next year. They really need to get the bathrooms finished asap and enforce the max # of campers to keep the overall crowds down.

There's a fog horn that blares every 10 seconds. It's not a wholly unpleasant sound on its own, but it seems louder at night when things quiet down. Aside from its potential to disturb your sleep if you don't have earplugs, the most annoying thing about it is that it makes distorted perceptions of time very obvious; knowing it's every 10 seconds, but sometimes thinking you're hearing it 2 seconds...
