About China Bar Campground

Campground in California.

China Bar Campground offers a secluded riverside camping experience in the heart of California's Gold Country, providing a peaceful retreat for RV enthusiasts seeking to escape the hustle and bustle of modern life. Nestled along the American River, this intimate public campground with just six sites creates an exclusive atmosphere that feels more like a private retreat than a typical commercial facility. The small size means you'll experience a quieter, more personal camping experience where you can actually connect with nature and fellow travelers without the overwhelming crowds found at larger parks.

The location along the American River is one of the campground's greatest assets. The river provides opportunities for fishing, kayaking, and simply enjoying the soothing sounds of flowing water from your RV site. The surrounding landscape features beautiful oak woodlands and scenic vistas that showcase the natural beauty of the Sierra Nevada foothills. Early mornings and evenings are particularly magical here, with stunning light filtering through the trees and wildlife actively moving through the area.

This area sits perfectly positioned for exploring the historic Gold Rush region of California. The nearby towns of Coloma and Placerville offer fascinating glimpses into California's mining heritage, with museums, historic buildings, and interpretive centers that bring the 1800s to life. The Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park is within reasonable driving distance, making it an excellent day trip destination for those interested in history.

The campground appeals to a variety of travelers. History buffs will appreciate the proximity to Gold Country attractions. Nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts enjoy the river access and peaceful woodland setting. Anglers find value in the fishing opportunities along the American River. Couples seeking a romantic getaway will appreciate the intimate setting and natural beauty. The small size and riverside location make it ideal for those who want to disconnect from technology and reconnect with nature and loved ones.

The region experiences pleasant weather during spring through fall, with mild winters typical of the Sierra foothills. Summer months offer warm days perfect for water activities, while spring brings wildflower blooms that brighten the landscape. The elevation provides relief from the extreme heat found in California's central valley.

Highlights: Amazing shade, tons of trees for hammocks, fires allowed, grated fire pit, grated grill, picnic bench, trash cans, not many mosquitoes, extremely isolated. Lowlights: Lack of flat spots for big tents, no running water, vault toilets, TONS of small flies throughout the day that are very annoying but harmless, lack of clearing for star gazing, 4 wheel drive highly recommended.

China Camp is a popular trail head for backpackers in the cooler winter and spring months.

China camp has largely been forgotten. It seems the water supply was disconnected some years ago, and as the small creek through the camp is almost always dry, there is no water. The nearest supply is a 0.5 mile walk down the steep road to where the creek gets close to the road (would need filtering). The long drop toilets were not in great condition. However, it is pretty under the mature oaks... China camp has largely been forgotten. I did not stay at the China Camp campground, just used the outhouse type bathrooms which are two separate rickety shacks, one with a semi-functional door and toilet paper. Then I leave the campground to go a short distance diwn the road to the small dirt parking lot. The parking lot is almost directly across the road from the Pine Valley trail-head.

My daughter and I took the drive up for lunch. It was great. No one there , nice and quite. We did see a lot of reservations for camp site's tho. Next time we go will be to hike into Pine Valley. A easy over night trip. If you get a chance I would highly recommend any hike into the Ventana wilderness. And have fun as well as a good time. Just be respectful of our land...
