About Columbia Airport Campground

Campground in California.

Nestled in the heart of California's Gold Country, Columbia Airport Campground offers RV travelers an ideal base for exploring one of the region's most historically rich and naturally beautiful areas. This public campground provides convenient access to the charming town of Columbia, a well-preserved gold rush era community that transports visitors back in time with its authentic Main Street, period buildings, and genuine frontier atmosphere. The campground's location makes it perfect for history enthusiasts, outdoor adventurers, and families seeking a unique California experience that combines Old West heritage with modern camping comfort.

The Columbia area sits at a moderate elevation in the Sierra Nevada foothills, offering pleasant temperatures throughout most of the year and stunning natural scenery. Visitors will find themselves surrounded by rolling hills, gold-tinted landscapes, and the kind of peaceful mountain atmosphere that makes RV camping so rewarding. The nearby Stanislaus National Forest provides endless opportunities for hiking, nature walks, and outdoor exploration, while the historic mining trails in the region tell stories of the 1800s gold rush that shaped California's frontier heritage.

Beyond the historical attractions, the area offers surprising diversity for travelers of all interests. Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy fishing in nearby streams and lakes, hiking trails that range from easy scenic walks to more challenging mountain adventures, and picnicking spots throughout the surrounding forest. The region's mild climate and scenic vistas make it equally appealing for those who simply want to relax and enjoy the peaceful mountain setting.

Columbia itself features museums, shops, restaurants, and seasonal events that celebrate Gold Country culture and heritage. Main Street captures authentic Old West charm without feeling overly commercialized, offering genuine local experiences and connections to California's fascinating mining history. Whether you're interested in learning about the gold rush, enjoying outdoor activities, or simply escaping to a peaceful mountain setting, this location delivers a memorable RV camping experience that balances history, nature, and adventure.

Great little campground. Men’s and women’s bathrooms, showers, a small dining hall building with commercial kitchen, and picnic tables scattered throughout. Adequate hot water in showers. Two additional porta-potties outside bathrooms. Tons of airplane parking (gravel/ broken asphalt taxiway to camping area). Short walk from plane to camping area. Two additional porta-potties outside bathrooms. Tons of airplane parking (gravel/ broken asphalt taxiway to camping area). Short walk from plane to camping area. Picnics tables scattered around (some are very old/ deteriorating, in need of new nails or refurbishment). We didn’t have any issues with ants, another couple did; be careful where you set up your tent. This campground is walking distance to several good restaurants, including Mandy’s, Bella Union, Waterwheel Pizza Parlor, and Columbia Frosty, El Jardin Mexican, Kate’s Teahouse, and Kate’s Bakery, among others. NOTE: there’s poison oak along many of the walking trails around the airport/ trails into town. Staying on the main roads is advised, unless you know what poison oak looks like, and can avoid it. Hopefully they can weed-wack some of the trails better, and clear them out, so they’re more suitable for hikers and tourists.

I flew in - there is a place to park along the sketchy gravel taxiway. Bring chocks! Next time I go, I may even taxi on the grass runway to avoid that taxiway. Obviously there will be plane noise during daylight, but what I wasn't counting on was a nearby bunch of dogs yapping incessantly all night.
