About Edwards AFB Fam Camp

Campground in California.

Edwards Air Force Base Family Camp offers a unique camping experience in the heart of the Mojave Desert, providing RV enthusiasts with an affordable and authentic military recreation destination. Located in California's High Desert region, this family-friendly campground welcomes eligible military personnel, retirees, and their families to experience the stark beauty and wide-open spaces that characterize this distinctive landscape.

The Edwards AFB area sits at approximately 2,300 feet elevation, offering cooler temperatures than lower desert regions while still providing that classic desert camping atmosphere. The surrounding landscape features vast horizons, dramatic desert vistas, and clear night skies perfect for stargazing. This is quintessential High Desert country, where you'll experience significant temperature variations between day and night, making it an ideal destination for those seeking authentic desert camping without extreme summer heat.

For visitors interested in aerospace and aviation history, Edwards Air Force Base itself represents a significant landmark in American aviation heritage. The base has been home to legendary test flights and remains an active center for aerospace testing and development. Many guests enjoy exploring the local area's connection to this important military and technological history, though specific base access varies for visitors.

The Mojave Desert environment surrounding the campground appeals to nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts who appreciate wide-open spaces and dramatic desert scenery. Hiking opportunities exist in the surrounding desert landscape, and the area provides excellent conditions for photography, particularly during sunrise and sunset when the desert light is most spectacular. The peaceful, remote setting makes it an excellent choice for those seeking a quiet camping retreat away from busier tourist destinations.

The community aspect of family camp living adds another dimension to the experience, with fellow military families creating a welcoming and supportive camping environment. This makes it an excellent choice for military families looking to connect with others who share similar backgrounds and lifestyles. The affordability of the facility compared to private RV parks makes it an attractive option for budget-conscious travelers with military credentials.

Whether you're planning a weekend escape or an extended desert camping adventure, Edwards AFB Family Camp provides straightforward, honest camping in a unique High Desert setting.

It is the most desolate and depressing base that I have ever been at and that includes 29 Palms. It is filthy with trash and litter everywhere and the airmen don't even look up when addressed.

Wide open spots. Laundry. Picnic area. Small campsite but close to shopping.

We spent two nights at this fam camp at the beginning of May. What a disgrace to the United States Air Force. This place is a junk yard. They obviously do not really care about those who served and their families. Too many full timers. That should not be allowed. Restrooms and laundry were filthy and smelled horrible. Dry camping did not have any water etc. it was truly a parking lot. I’d rat... We spent two nights at this fam camp at the beginning of May. What a disgrace to the United States Air Force. Entrance for the OR office is not well marked and the building parking lot is not conducive for parking with a trailer. During our visit, the main full hookup site was not available due to ongoing construction, so we boondocked in the gravel overflow lot. According to the website, construction is scheduled for completion in December 2023, so possibly the new year will bring better experiences. We will likely not return to this base.

Came back to the base for 2 weeks after COVID teleworking the past year. They've expanded and added 15 more spots. However, it is completely full with what appears to be permanent residents. However, it is completely full with what appears to be permanent residents. Every site looks to be set up for long stays with outdoor lights, multiple cars, parked bicycles, etc. It looks like base housing overflow. I had to set up in a parking lot near my office. Luckily, I brought a generator and had enough fresh water in my tank to flush my toilet. Update 7/30/2024: Rating changed from 1 star to 4. They moved everyone out last fall to replace the asphalt. Since then, there have been a few open spots available for temporary use and raised the price $5, to $35/day. It’s still hit or miss, but I’ve been able to get a spot on weekends during the hottest parts of the year.
