About Jedediah Smith Campground

Campground in California.

Jedediah Smith Campground offers an exceptional gateway to one of California's most magnificent natural treasures. Nestled in the heart of redwood country near Crescent City, this public campground provides the perfect base for exploring some of the tallest trees on Earth. The campground's 89 sites accommodate various RV sizes and camping preferences, making it accessible to families, couples, and solo adventurers alike seeking immersion in old-growth forest environments.

The immediate surroundings are nothing short of spectacular. You'll wake up surrounded by ancient coastal redwoods that create a naturally serene and shaded camping atmosphere. These towering giants, some over 2,000 years old, provide a humbling reminder of nature's grandeur while also offering natural cooling and protection from coastal fog. The location puts you steps away from some of California's most pristine wilderness areas, where you can hike among trees that dwarf everything else on the continent.

For outdoor enthusiasts, the opportunities are endless. The nearby Smith River offers excellent salmon and steelhead fishing opportunities, drawing anglers from across the country during peak seasons. Numerous hiking trails wind through the surrounding redwood groves, from easy family-friendly walks to more challenging backcountry expeditions. Birdwatching is exceptional here, with the diverse forest ecosystem supporting a wide variety of avian species. This location appeals particularly to nature photographers, hikers, fishing enthusiasts, and anyone seeking to disconnect from urban life while staying comfortable in an RV setting.

The temperate climate of Northern California's coast means extended camping seasons, though visitors should prepare for occasional fog and rainfall typical of the region. Lovely campsites among the giant tall trees. Avg. 60-65F, 55 overnight temps in early September. Very shady, slightly damp. Adequate restroom and shower facilities with liberal water access and trash bins. Keep it crumb clean. Do not feed the pretty Jay birds; they are invasive and harm the local extremely rare species.

Unsafe location next to the noisy highway with drifters walking through the trails to steal campers belongings. Expensive. Not very private. Staff are rude.

If you're not going for any of the touristy stuff, this is the spot to camp. Absolutely beautiful, great campsites. The porta potties were gross but that's to be expected. The one ranger I spoke to was very nice.

It’s nice to be driving distance to provisions too in crescent city. Special shout out to campsite 4 and also to the ranger staffing the visitor center onsite, Rick. His suggestions for our hike on Mill Creek into the Grove of Titans hit the mark. And fern valley (permit required) was also amazing with sighting of elk along the beach. He advised for Enderts beach for tide pools in low tide and we were taken away by all the starfish and sea life. All of this was
