This beautiful asset of the city of Oakland is over 100 years old and only getting better every year. Everything is lovingly maintained, rustic and simple. The food at family camp is incredible. The community is unforgettable. I’ve become a sustaining donor and I can’t wait to return next year!

Wonderful experience from start to end! Beds were better than air beds, cabin was cozy and we loved the porch aspect, we paid for the electric cabin, food was plentiful and kid friendly and delicious, activities and camp leaders so friendly welcoming awesome, families so nice. Activities were awesome, from art to nature to yoga. The rustic showers are awesome!! Hot water that doesnt require coins?... Hot water that doesnt require coins?! Hot delicious coffee at 7am, water, tea and lemonade and ice all day! The horses were healthy, happy, beautiful animals--a real trail ride, not some sad animals going back and forth. I am astonished how much care and work goes into keeping the bathrooms sparkling (its camp, but wow they were always clean),, the kitchen and food running, the energy and care in the activities. Its HOT! It took all my energy to come to breakfast sometimes but the counselors were bringing it!! The organizers do a great job with communicating, by email before and with an orientation and also daily announcements during camp. Kids have a great time running around, it is a fun awesome place. Tips maybe you dont think of: if you book electric, bring a small fan! You will be so happy when its 100 daytime or 80 night. Bring cash for the Tips for the horse back riding. I wish I'd had more $$ for tips because the wranglers were amazing. Take a shower in the awesome metal showers at main camp overlooking the river at daybreak. Bring a small cooler and ice if you want waters or whatever in your cabin, but no need for food or stuff otherwise. We astonishingly didnt get eaten alive by mosquitos but I would bring sprays in case. Light bulb in cabin so bright, hanging a hat or lantern over it made it so nice. Tents get way more ambient light but some dont have porch so you might want camp chairs. Bring extra bedding! It was in the 60s at night but we were coziest inside our normal sleeping bags (rated to 30) with a blanket on top--before sunrise was cold! The drive is LONG! Google maps says 3.5-4 hours but it took us 5+ both ways. We went up a wiggly mountain road and back down the 70--I definitely recommend the 70 (feather river highway) for both beauty and less barfishness. If you see that $5 plastic ukulele at goodwill, buy it and bring it! Or bring a sketch book or crafts, its so nice to relax with an activity in the evening--or skip that and play at the main community room, there are games and books and so many nice people everywhere! You'll want flip flops or sandals to go to the beach:-) bring an inner tube or water guns! Go in the river at 2-3, sit around wet and do some relaxing, swim from 4-5, and you'll enjoy the blazing dry mountain afternoon. Have fun!!!!

What a treasure. Great for the kids as well as the parents. The food is exceptional, the staff is friendly and go out of their way to take care of you. The facilities are top-notch, and the community of folks that make the trek out there make you feel like family. This is the quintessential family summer camp where memories are made. Cannot recommend enough.
