Pine Creek Trailhead is the northern access to this trail. The trail goes far, but we only hiked 2 miles to the 8 freeway overpass bridge and then back. The trail goes along a dirt road and then down to the creek. The trail by the creek is not well defined and feels more like bush wacking at times. The trail is better once the stream is crossed, along the eastern side of the river.

If you'd like, you can walk all the way to Horsethief Canyon 14 miles away. This would be a good starter backpacking trip too, especially if you did it as a point-to-point by leaving a vehicle at the other end or getting dropped off/ picked up. There is plenty of water in the creek so you don't have to carry a lot (but make sure to treat it, as there are cows in the area). Watch for ticks - we found several crawling on our dogs (but they didn't get bitten since they're on preventatives). This is a dog-friendly area and since it's National Forest, they're allowed off-leash as long as they're within voice control.

The Pine Creek trail itself isn't very well maintained and it was hard to follow. However the nearby service road was a nice little hike. The creek itself is very nice and relaxing. Also if you're going for the actual trail instead of the service road make sure to wear pants, a lot of thorny bushes and such.

One of the most beautiful places I have hiked in San Diego. We went right after the rainy season so everything was beautiful and green. Also, we only saw one other group during our hike, which was a huge plus.

YASSSSSSSS great hiking area with some wonderfully unexpected views. Very well maintained and respected trail system from what I could deduct. Pack out what you pack in, heck maybe even pick up a piece of litter on your way out! #respectitdontneglectit ♻ 🚮 🌎

A very nice campground. No running water but there is a creek that runs through so if needed you can filter water. There is a store on site and they sell fire wood. Easy to find and locate your spot. Bathrooms are clean and don't smell.

The sites gather into the campground are nicely spread apart, so you are not right next to your neighbor. There is a great hiking trail about a 5 minute walk from the grounds. The photos surreal for themselves. Will definitely be visiting again. Oh and speaking of away from the city- this place is definitely off the grid. No cell service!
