About Pit River Campground

Campground in California.

Nestled in the rugged beauty of northeastern California, Pit River Campground offers RV travelers an authentic gateway to one of the state's most pristine natural regions. This public campground serves as an ideal base for exploring the volcanic landscapes, river valleys, and outdoor recreation opportunities that define this corner of California.

The Pit River area is renowned for its stunning natural features and relatively undiscovered character. Unlike the crowded parks of central California, this region maintains a sense of solitude and genuine wilderness that appeals to travelers seeking escape from the beaten path. The dramatic geology tells a story of ancient volcanic activity, creating spectacular vistas and interesting geological formations throughout the surrounding landscape. The Pit River itself is a jewel for outdoor enthusiasts, offering opportunities for fishing and scenic exploration.

Location-wise, Pit River Campground provides convenient access to some remarkable natural attractions. The area is characterized by volcanic plateaus, pine forests, and canyon systems that offer countless opportunities for hiking, wildlife viewing, and photography. Spring-fed streams and the river itself create a refreshing backdrop for your camping experience, with the sounds of flowing water and birdsong providing the perfect natural soundtrack.

The campground appeals to a diverse range of travelers. Anglers appreciate the fishing opportunities the Pit River provides, with the potential to catch native species in a relatively uncrowded setting. Nature photographers find endless subjects in the dramatic landscapes and changing light across the volcanic terrain. Families enjoy the peaceful atmosphere and manageable scale of the area, while those seeking solitude value the remote character of the region.

The surrounding region offers a genuine California backcountry experience. The area maintains its natural character with minimal commercial development, making it perfect for those who want to disconnect and reconnect with nature. The elevation and northern location provide cooler temperatures during summer months, offering a pleasant alternative to the heat of lower elevations. Fall visitors enjoy spectacular seasonal changes, while spring brings wildflower displays to the landscape.

Whether you're interested in river exploration, geological wonders, wildlife observation, or simply enjoying quiet evenings under the stars, Pit River Campground provides an accessible entry point to northeastern California's remarkable natural heritage.

7 very private wooded campsites with fire pits and picnic tables. $12/ night no reservations. Quiet except for the whine of the nearby power turbine at night. Clean vault toilets. Camp host that provides firewood for a donation.

This is beautiful place to swim with no hiking required to get too the water. Right next to the swimming area is a a part of the river you can fish in. The area has picnic tables also. The bathrooms are immaculate and by far the cleanest campsite bathrooms I have ever seen. I only seen about 5 campsites but I think there may be more. The parking lot is right next to the swimming area so this has extremely easy access for day swimming. The water was a very nice temperature.

Besides the late night party next door, the campsite is really nice. Bathrooms were clean and supplied. The camp host was friendly and helpful. Easy access to the river and a trail going all the way to Pit River Falls.

It's a small, 8 site campground that has trees separating sites, so privacy is a premium. Plus, the trees add a sound barrier for each site.

Small but beautiful campground that has the most spotless pit toilets I have ever experienced! Spaces are generous in size and feel very private. The swimming area is magical. $8 a night is a bargain!
