About Rainbow Basin/Owl Canyon Campground

Federal campground in California.

Nestled in the high desert landscape of California, Rainbow Basin and Owl Canyon Campground offers RV travelers a gateway to some of the most striking geological wonders in the region. Located near Barstow, this public campground sits at the edge of a landscape painted in layers of ancient history, where colorful badlands tell stories millions of years in the making.

The area surrounding the campground is defined by dramatic natural beauty that draws geologists, photographers, and nature enthusiasts from across the country. The distinctive striations of rainbow-hued rock formations in nearby Rainbow Basin create an otherworldly palette of reds, yellows, greens, and purples that shift and intensify with the changing light throughout the day. Visitors will find themselves immersed in a landscape that feels both alien and deeply connected to the earth's ancient past. The high desert setting provides clear skies perfect for stargazing, with minimal light pollution allowing for stunning views of the night sky.

This location is ideal for travelers interested in geology, paleontology, and outdoor exploration. The surrounding area offers excellent opportunities for hiking, with trails ranging from easy walks to more challenging adventures through the badlands. Photographers will discover endless subjects in the unique rock formations and desert vistas, particularly during sunrise and sunset when the light transforms the landscape into a photographer's dream.

The campground serves as an excellent base for exploring the broader Mojave Desert region. Nearby attractions include access to desert wildlife viewing, rockhounding opportunities, and the chance to explore California's unique high desert ecosystem. The quietness and remoteness of the area appeal to those seeking solitude and a genuine connection with the natural world, away from the crowds of more developed campgrounds.

Whether you're a seasoned desert explorer or experiencing the high desert for the first time, Rainbow Basin and Owl Canyon Campground provides an authentic and memorable RV camping experience in one of California's most visually striking natural settings.

There is a hiking trail attached to the campground and it starts at the very end of the drive through the grounds. I would also highly recommend taking a car and driving just a hop and a skip over to explore the Rainbow Basin scenic drive and also do the hike that has the slot canyon, it’s so much fun.

For the low nightly rate, this scenic camping experience offers unbeatable value. The Landscape: The rock formations are the star! Located right next to the Rainbow Basin Natural Area, the colored canyons and hills are spectacular. They offer fantastic hiking and photography opportunities, especially at sunset. Access & Vibe: The access road is a washboarded dirt path (slow down and take it easy), but the trade-off is total peacefulness once you arrive. You are far enough off the highway for amazing quiet and dark skies, but still a short drive from Barstow if you need supplies. The Value: $6 PER NIGHT! First-come, first-served sites come with picnic tables, fire rings, vault toilets, and usually even water and trash disposal (check status before relying on it!). For six bucks, this is incredible value for a scenic, quiet spot near the colorful Rainbow Basin.

A hidden gem. Each site has a shaded picnic table, a cement grill, and a fire ring with an adjustable grill. Plenty of flat space to pitch a tent or park an RV. Vault toilets (I was here during the shutdown so bring your own toilet paper) limited running water. Stunning views, amazing trail head, and only $6!!! Late October the weather was absolutely gorgeous.

Very quiet. $6 per night. Clean restroom and shaded sites with bbq and picnic tables. 21 is in the far back and isolated. Keep it clean.
