About Thousand Trails

Campground in California.

Nestled in the scenic hills of Paicines, California, Thousand Trails offers RV travelers an authentic gateway to the natural beauty and outdoor recreation opportunities that define the region. This public campground serves as an ideal base for exploring the diverse landscapes of central California, where rolling hills meet agricultural valleys and outdoor adventures await around every corner.

The Paicines area is known for its peaceful, rural character and proximity to some of California's most interesting destinations. San Juan Bautista, a charming historic town just a short drive away, features beautifully preserved Spanish colonial architecture and the iconic San Juan Bautista State Historic Park. History enthusiasts will appreciate exploring the old mission grounds, historic homes, and walking the grounds where California's past comes alive. The nearby Salinas Valley offers agricultural heritage and farm-to-table experiences that celebrate the region's farming traditions.

For nature lovers, the surrounding landscape provides excellent opportunities for hiking, exploring country roads, and enjoying the California countryside. The elevation and geography of the region create pleasant weather patterns, with mild winters and warm summers that make RV camping comfortable throughout much of the year. Birdwatchers will find the area rewarding, as the valley sits along migration routes and supports diverse bird species.

The Paicines location also offers convenient access to larger attractions within reasonable driving distances. Whether you're interested in wine country experiences, visiting state parks, or simply enjoying the slower pace of rural California life, this campground provides a comfortable home base. The quieter, less-crowded nature of this destination appeals to travelers seeking a more peaceful camping experience away from major tourist centers.

Thousand Trails works well for families wanting to explore California's heartland, couples seeking a relaxing getaway, and travelers using the location as a stopping point while exploring central California's many regions. The campground's position makes it particularly suitable for those interested in agricultural tourism, historical sites, and enjoying the natural beauty of California's interior valleys.

We had a lovely stay here. The location is great, 30 mins to the Pinnacles, 40 mins to San Juan Batista Mission or 20 to Hollister, super cute with restaurants and shops. Free WiFi at the lodge, outside of that there is no cell service. We stayed in a 6 person cabin, the kids loved the loft. Heavy rains caused some issues with the direct tv but they went above and beyond to try and fix it. Even offering to switch cabins if we’d like. Staff then brought us back a meat thermometer during their attempts after overhearing my mom say she wanted one. Which was probably the only thing the kitchen was missing. The thoughtful kindness was very much appreciated. Just magical all around. We will be back!

The location is a good area if you’re a hunter otherwise it’s a long way to any amenities. The park itself is under construction and not kept up very well. Great people and quiet, clean NEW sites. We regrettably had a major issue with our RV and they were more than accommodating in extending our time and helping get all done. The park is being renovated and the sites are mostly gravel pad with new utility and cleared areas. The staff is friendly and always answered the phone…Will return soon as we have additional repairs scheduled in the area.

I would stay there for 3 weeks at a time and then stay my week out at the fairgrounds while I worked in Hollister. The staff knew me very well. One morning in April 2023 I got up and went to work as usual. When I returned at 9:30pm I noticed that the entire park had been evacuated due to flooding. I began to panic because my dog and cat were stranded in my RV. There was No staff around, not even the general manager. The bridges to get to my site were completely under water. It was as if we were in a sinking ship and the Captain had abandoned it, leaving everyone to fend for themselves. Keep in mind, never once did I receive a phone call to advise me that the park was being evacuated. I could have easily made it there in 30 minutes if I had known that. There were a couple other people there who were in the same position as I was in. They said that all the staff had left hours ago. I REFUSED to leave my animals stranded there. So I crossed the flooded bridge on foot in the pitch black dark and walked the 2 miles back to my site so that I could make sure that my pets were okay. I trusted that this park was a safe place for me and my pets, but I was wrong. They have all of my information on file to contact me in case of an emergency yet they failed to do so. This is purely negligence on Thousand Trails. I stayed in the flooded area that night until people arrived the next day. I have not been back since and Thousand Trails refuses to let me out of my contract
