About Tuolumne Meadows Horse Camp

Campground in California.

Tuolumne Meadows Horse Camp offers a remarkable opportunity to experience the natural splendor of Yosemite National Park from a unique perspective. Located at approximately 8,600 feet elevation in the heart of the Sierra Nevada mountains, this specialized campground caters to visitors who want to explore the park's vast wilderness on horseback, making it an ideal destination for equestrian enthusiasts and adventure seekers alike.

The setting itself is extraordinary. Tuolumne Meadows is one of the largest subalpine meadows in California, featuring sweeping vistas of granite peaks, pristine alpine lakes, and pristine forests. During summer months, the meadows burst into color with wildflowers, creating a photographer's paradise and a serene backdrop for your camping experience. The cool mountain air and clear starry nights provide a refreshing escape from lower elevations and crowded valley areas.

This location serves as an excellent base for exploring some of Yosemite's most spectacular backcountry. Nearby attractions include Cathedral Lakes, Tenaya Lake, and countless high country trails that lead to hidden alpine lakes and mountain vistas. The Tuolumne River, known for its beauty and recreational opportunities, winds through the area. Many visitors appreciate the relative solitude found in the high country compared to more heavily visited sections of the park.

The horse camp specifically provides facilities designed for travelers arriving with their own horses or stock animals. This opens up extraordinary opportunities for backcountry exploration and creates a camping experience that feels genuinely remote and immersive. The elevation and setting mean cooler temperatures throughout the season, making summer months the primary operating period, typically from late June through early September.

Tuolumne Meadows Horse Camp appeals to seasoned outdoors people, equestrian adventurers, mountaineers, and anyone seeking to experience Yosemite's wilderness in a meaningful way. The combination of stunning natural beauty, access to world-class hiking and riding trails, and the sense of solitude found in the high country creates a truly memorable camping adventure that showcases why this region of California is treasured by outdoor enthusiasts worldwide.

I was excited to stay at Tuolumne Meadows Campground after an extensive renovation. It's beautiful spot and well placed to visit many of my favorite spots. I live in Phoenix, so getting into that mountain environment after a long, hot summer was so refreshing. My only complaint was the placement of the bathrooms. The bathrooms were like a quarter mile from my campsite.

Beautiful campground with access to the best part of Yosemite and the high country! The campsites were great, the washrooms were so clean and had flush toilets, no showers. We had a really noisy neighbor made noise the whole night until 12am and got really frustrating. The second night we had a lovely cold couple who were really respectful and quiet. Would love to camp here again! Absolutely well... Beautiful campground with access to the best part of Yosemite and the high country! Rangers were very nice and helpful. Location is outstanding. Creek running through is gorgeous. 65% of bathrooms are really nice. No showers, but that’s ok. Camp sites vary in size- definitely not all equal; also fine but fyi. Had a great stay.

Newly renovated after a 3-years closure. All sites have new fire pits, tables and benches, and what seems like slightly larger bear boxes. The restrooms are also renovated but don't have any new features.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ if they had showers. Sites are decent and the campground is quiet. Restrooms with flush toilets were clean. Each area has a water spigot. 👍🏼👍🏼
