About Upper Kings Group Campground

Campground in California.

Upper Kings Group Campground offers a unique camping experience nestled in the heart of California's stunning Sierra Nevada region. This public campground provides an excellent base for groups looking to explore one of California's most spectacular mountain landscapes. The campground's location along the Kings River watershed puts you in the midst of some of the state's most pristine natural beauty, with towering pine forests and dramatic granite peaks surrounding the area.

The Sierra Nevada mountains that frame this region are legendary among outdoor enthusiasts for their stunning vistas, crystal-clear alpine lakes, and abundant outdoor recreation opportunities. Whether you're interested in hiking, fishing, or simply immersing yourself in mountain scenery, the Upper Kings area delivers an authentic California wilderness experience. The elevation and mountain setting provide relief from the intense summer heat of California's valleys, making this an ideal destination for groups seeking to escape the heat and enjoy cooler mountain air.

Group camping at Upper Kings allows you to bring together family members or friends for an extended outdoor adventure. The Kings River itself is a major draw for many visitors, offering opportunities for water-based activities and scenic riverside exploration. The surrounding national forest lands provide endless trails for hikers of various skill levels, from gentle walks to more challenging backcountry routes.

This area is particularly appealing to those who want to experience California's High Country without the crowds often found at more developed campgrounds. The remote mountain setting means you'll feel genuinely away from it all, yet the campground infrastructure provides the basic accommodations needed for a comfortable group camping trip. The natural surroundings offer spectacular photography opportunities, especially during spring wildflower season and fall when the landscape transforms with seasonal colors.

Visitors typically spend time exploring the river canyons, fishing for trout, hiking to alpine meadows, and enjoying evening campfires under star-filled mountain skies. The peaceful mountain environment makes this location perfect for groups looking to reconnect with nature and each other, away from the distractions of everyday life.

Coming on a weekend everything was sold out but when you find a place like this you don’t hesitate to stop for the night. The lack of city lights and the mountains surrounding the area makes it a great place to star gaze. It is family owned and operated and very friendly staff. I saved this place for future travels. Oh and they serve Ice cream and gas in case you are just passing through.

It's definitely has its own character. Very secluded and it's privately owned. Great host 👏 If you want to stay away from the crowed this place will give you that edge of likeness. There is gas and ICE CREAM and ohhhh WIFI 😂 🧊😳 It's also not that far from cavern cave. Will definitely stay here again!

Nice campground, bathroom was clean and the area was very quiet. The tent sites are NOT drive in which I couldn’t tell from the map, I definitely recommend just getting an RV site. Close to the road but not much traffic. Night sky was amazing! Lots of deer coming though. No cell service.

Easy to find and book! We got site 6, right by the road but it quiets down at night. Nice for a rest in between Sequoia and Kings, especially because we made stops to Hume lake in between the journey. The site across from us was empty all night while the camps in Kings was booked solid. Porta potty, but like I said it’s good for one night. Also across the way at the RV section they offer cocktails and ice cream!

We liked the campground, but there were a few issues: It was July 5th. The toilets were not dumped or cleaned in the main area where RVs are by the gas station. Of the 3 bathrooms close to us, only 1 was really useable, but we did learn that if we crossed the highway and the creek to the tent side, their bathroom was clean. The real reason for why I marked this lower was really about the Gas Station. The Gas Station is UNRELIABLE!!!!! We were told it might be open on the weekends, but really its on the whims of the person running it. By the time we came back through at noon after going to Boyden Caves, he still wasnt opened. We may come back, but I wouldn't count of this gas station. There are some roads in that area that make for a nice walk around the campsite.
