About ALMANOR

Federal campground in California.

Nestled in the serene landscapes of northeastern California, Almanor National Forest offers RV campers an exceptional retreat into nature's embrace. This stunning destination centers around the magnificent Lake Almanor, a pristine alpine lake surrounded by towering pines, dense forests, and dramatic mountain vistas that create an idyllic backdrop for outdoor enthusiasts of all kinds.

Lake Almanor itself is the heart of the experience here. The crystal-clear waters invite swimming, boating, fishing, and water sports throughout the warmer months. Whether you're an angler hoping to land trophy trout or a family seeking refreshing lakeside recreation, the water welcomes you with its cool, inviting embrace. The lake stretches across thousands of acres, providing ample space for everyone to find their perfect spot.

Beyond the water, the surrounding national forest presents endless exploration opportunities. Hiking trails wind through the landscape, ranging from leisurely walks to more challenging treks through alpine meadows and dense woodlands. Mountain biking enthusiasts will find exciting routes that showcase the region's natural beauty. In the colder months, the area transforms into a winter wonderland, attracting visitors interested in snow activities and the quiet peace of a snow-covered forest.

The elevation and location create a perfect climate escape, especially for those seeking relief from summer heat. Daytime temperatures remain pleasantly warm while nights cool considerably, offering comfortable sleeping conditions even without heavy air conditioning. The forest provides natural shade and protection from intense sun exposure.

The region's small mountain communities nearby offer charming amenities, local dining options, and supplies without the overwhelming crowds of more popular destinations. This balance between remote natural beauty and accessible conveniences makes Almanor particularly appealing for RVers who want genuine wilderness experiences without sacrificing basic comforts.

Almanor attracts retirees seeking peaceful natural retreats, families wanting outdoor adventures, fishing enthusiasts, and anyone yearning to disconnect from urban life while remaining connected to essential services. The consistently high visitor ratings reflect the genuine quality and satisfaction this destination delivers.

VERY IMPORTANT INFO. These campgrounds were ok. There was a fire recently, so not much wildlife. The bathrooms were very well maintained with a light inside and fresh paint. NO SINK OR SHOWER. Campsites very close to each other. Water spout outside bathrooms. Get spot 50 if you can. It's closest to the lake. The camp host was nice. And I really liked the grills on the fire pit. I made Quesadilla'... VERY IMPORTANT INFO. These campgrounds were ok. There was a fire recently, so not much wildlife. The bathrooms were very well maintained with a light inside and fresh paint. NOW before going there or leaving your town, be absolutely sure to purchase everything you need for your trip before coming to this town. It has only a few stores that are a rip-off. The two gas stations didn't have prices on anything, so they could charge however they liked. Single cans of BEER were priced almost 5 dollars more than they should be. The town is not worth the visit. The lake was. I didn't see a playground area. It's dog friendly but the ask that you keep them on leashes. Each site had a picnic table and fire pit. And plenty of restrooms scattered through the grounds.

Almanor is a special place, and the Almanor Campgrounds are hard to beat. On the map, it shows only one campground but actually there are 3 separate Forest Service Campgrounds, with a total of about 120 campsites. There is a free boat launch and a wonderful paved bike trail that goes through all of them and follows the lake shore for 11 miles! Free day use areas with picnic tables, and pet friendl... Beautiful campground. I went to the South. All campsites are huge! Some pit and some flush toilets. No shower. Less than half mile walk to the lake. They always have fireworks every 4th of July. Please support local businesses if you're in the area.

Busy on weekends. Kids have no respect for fishing. Rocks hard on feet for swimming (bring water shoes). Great view! Not much parking. (Weekdays is plenty of parking).
