About Angel Lake Campground

See web site and consult Recreation.gov for exact opening and closing dates each season.

Nestled in the heart of California's natural splendor, Angel Lake Campground offers RV travelers an authentic escape into the Sierra Nevada mountains. This National Forest gem provides the perfect basecamp for those seeking solitude, outdoor recreation, and the restorative power of alpine scenery. The campground sits at a refreshing elevation where cool mountain breezes provide relief from summer heat, and the crisp air carries the scent of pine and fir trees that tower overhead.

The location places you in an ideal position to explore some of California's most pristine wilderness areas. The surrounding landscape features dramatic granite peaks, crystal-clear alpine lakes, and meadows bursting with wildflowers during the warmer months. Hiking trails of varying difficulty levels radiate from the campground, offering everything from leisurely nature walks to challenging summit adventures. Many trails lead to breathtaking vistas and secluded alpine lakes perfect for fishing or simply soaking in the mountain majesty.

Angel Lake Campground appeals to a wide range of outdoor enthusiasts. Families appreciate the accessible nature of the setting and the abundance of activities suitable for all ages, from easy lakeside walks to wildlife viewing opportunities. Serious hikers and backpackers use it as a launching point for more ambitious backcountry expeditions. Fishing enthusiasts find excellent opportunities in the nearby waters, while photographers are captivated by the dramatic interplay of light and shadow across the mountainscape throughout the day.

The National Forest setting ensures a more rustic, undeveloped camping experience compared to commercial RV parks. This means you're truly immersed in nature while still enjoying the comfort of your RV home base. The peaceful environment, far from crowds and commercial development, creates an ideal retreat for those looking to disconnect from daily stress and reconnect with what matters most. Loved our campsite, neighbors were courteous of each other. Camp host was an absolute wonderful lady who kept the campgrounds and facilities in tip top shape. Taking our little blow up kayak on the lake was fun. We enjoyed fishing. The only reason I dropped a star is because of the amount of fishing line, hooks, and garbage we saw on one of the shores we were fishing from and hanging out on. I brought a Grocery bag and cleaned up for a straight hour and a half. It is a safety concern for both the wildlife and the human visitors, as well as just a visual reminder that some people don't clean up after themselves. I know some of it is accidental and can't be helped when lines snag on rocks or trees and water levels are higher..but this was pretty crazy. It made me think of Mirror Lake in Washington State -- lots of visitors to fish and camp, but people left tons of fishing supplies and garbage behind. Heartbreaking. But the campgrounds and bathrooms themselves were wonderful. Would definitely go back. And now one of the beaches is clean and ready for a relaxing day!

The drive up to the campground is not for the faint hearted, but I made it up in my little Chevy Malibu. The road has switchbacks, sheer drops, and no guard rails. The camp host was friendly and helpful. My site had a flat gravel area perfect for a tent. My only suggestion is to find ways to make your own shade and reduce the daytime heat. If you're tent camping, leave your rain fly off during the day or swarms of insects will find it a lovely place to gather. Be sure to wake up early to catch the sunrise!
