About Blue Lake Campground Group Site - Modoc NF (CA)

Federal campground in California.

Blue Lake Campground Group Site offers a wonderful escape into the heart of Modoc National Forest, where towering pines create a peaceful canopy and crystal-clear waters invite exploration. Located in northeastern California, this national forest campground provides an authentic outdoor experience for groups looking to connect with nature without sacrificing comfort and convenience.

The campground's setting is genuinely special. Blue Lake itself is the centerpiece, a pristine alpine lake surrounded by the natural beauty that makes the Modoc Plateau region so captivating. The forest here feels timeless, with mature stands of ponderosa pine and fir creating natural shade throughout the camping area. The elevation provides relief during warm months, and the cooler temperatures mean comfortable sleeping even in summer. Morning mist rising off the lake and the sound of birds welcoming the day are the kind of natural details that make camping memorable.

For groups, this location is ideal. Whether you're planning a family reunion, a friends' outdoor adventure, or a corporate retreat, the group site setup allows multiple camping units to stay together while still enjoying their own space. The proximity of the lake means water-based activities are right at hand. Fishing enthusiasts will appreciate the opportunity to try their luck, while swimmers and paddlers can enjoy the refreshing waters. Hiking trails in the surrounding national forest offer varying difficulty levels, so everyone from casual walkers to serious hikers can find suitable exploration options.

The greater Modoc area has a genuine frontier character. This is less-traveled California, where the landscape still feels wild and unspoiled. Clear night skies reveal stars with minimal light pollution, perfect for stargazing. The region's remote quality means you'll experience genuine solitude and the kind of quiet that allows real relaxation and reconnection.

Who enjoys this place most? Groups seeking meaningful time together away from daily distractions, outdoor enthusiasts wanting authentic forest camping, fishing families, and anyone craving the healing power of pine forests and mountain lakes. The 4.4-star rating from actual visitors speaks to the quality of the experience here.

Clean, large campsites with firepits and picnic tables. Lots of wildlife. Friendly reaponsible campers all over. Noise was kept to minimum. Boat dock was clean and bathrooms were fine for pit toilets. Day area picnic area is all dirt and tables but great for day use. Entire lake was clean and beautiful. Bear proof trashcans provided to keep the beara out and the mess in. Staff was nice and helpful... Clean, large campsites with firepits and picnic tables. Lots of wildlife. The staff reaponded appropriately and kept campers informed until it ended. Pay by check or cash for campsites as of this review. Kayak and fisherman friendly.

Beautiful place to camp. Pack in. Pack out. Nice place to kayak, swim, fish, hike. We found a painted rock of Blue Lake some child or person painted and left at one of the camp sites. July 24-26, 2020 Blue Lake Camp Ground.

Blue Lake Campground looks fantastic. A camp in the desert... yet, looks the same as any Campground in any national forest... I love it... I will camp here here if the opportunity is present...

This place is a hidden gem, so don't tell everybody! Not a bad campsite in the whole place and they are very spread out, so you don't even see your neighbors in some spots. There are also several right near the water and it is clean and gorgeous! Only cons to staying here are the yellowjackets. Not a bad campsite in the whole place and they are very spread out, so you don't even see your neighbors in some spots. There are also several right near the water and it is clean and gorgeous! Only cons to staying here are the yellowjackets. Thankfully we had a few traps to set up, but if we had not, we may not have stayed. They are really bad and if you have kids or dogs, keep an eye on them! We had to prepare some food inside the tents and even ate a couple of meals inside the tents or waited until the sun went down to cook because they are relentless. Also had to keep our tents and vehicles closed up at all times to keep them out. We wish someone would have told us about it so we could have prepared a little better, so here is your notice! Fishing in the lake is a bit strange, we caught a fish covered in some weird parasites or something, there were dozens and dozens on it, so decided we would let it go and just fished for fun after that. Overall a nice, quiet great place to camp and be unplugged for a few days.
