About Forks Campground (Sierra)

Federal campground in California.

Nestled in the heart of California's Sierra Nevada region, Forks Campground offers RV travelers an authentic forest retreat away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. This National Forest campground provides a genuine connection to the natural world, surrounded by towering trees and the peaceful sounds of mountain wilderness. The setting here is perfect for those seeking a slower pace and genuine outdoor immersion without sacrificing reasonable access to amenities and attractions.

The Sierra Nevada is one of California's most spectacular mountain ranges, and camping here puts you in the heart of some truly remarkable scenery. Whether you're an early riser or prefer leisurely mornings, you'll find the mountain air refreshing and the forest environment incredibly restorative. The elevation and forest canopy create a cool refuge during warm months, making it an ideal destination when lower elevations become uncomfortably hot.

This location serves as an excellent base for exploring the broader Sierra region. Outdoor enthusiasts will find abundant opportunities for hiking, fishing, and nature photography. The surrounding National Forest lands offer miles of trails suitable for various skill levels, from gentle walks to more challenging mountain routes. The area is rich with wildlife viewing opportunities, and birdwatchers will particularly appreciate the diverse species native to this elevation.

For those traveling with families, the campground provides a safe, peaceful environment where children can experience outdoor adventure and independence. The camping experience here teaches appreciation for nature's simple pleasures while remaining accessible to RV travelers who want their creature comforts alongside wilderness experience.

The nearby communities offer supply stops and services when needed, allowing you to gather provisions without traveling too far from your campsite. Restaurants, gas stations, and shops are within reasonable driving distance, so you're never completely isolated. Many RV travelers use this as a strategic stopping point while exploring the greater Sierra Nevada region, or as a destination unto itself for extended stays focused on outdoor recreation and natural beauty.

I was napping in the car when mama bear came with a cub at 4PM and opened my door, then saw me inside and walked away 😬. Mosquitos are aggressive 4-7PM, then temperatures drop and they disappear. Gets cold (40F) during the night (visited mid June 2025), while can be warm during the day. Convenience store and nice eatery nearby, the other one is Miller’s landing, which is also good (menu, prices, affordable).

I saw spots 26-28 have a great view of the water, which was absolutely beautiful at sunrise. The camp host was very friendly and informative. We saw no bears to my relief. This campsite was about 45 min from the south entrance of Yosemite. If not for the mosquitos, I would recommend this campground to others. Maybe it will be better in the dryer summer months regarding this.

The nights were great and having a fire was fantastic!!! The views were good. The lake was very nice. Store close. They did inform us that some road work was going to be done so we would have to take the detour to get back in as well as to let us know to keep ALL FOOD CLEANED UP and in cars as well as any trash to please throw it away. Due to the fact a young bear had made an appearance a couple of times recently. Very thankful for the info as our last night there we were awaken by someone yelling and scaring off a bear which we heard and smelled when inside our tent. All I have to say is DON'T COUNT on your dog barking if a bear is around. All my dog did was to whine to let me know. She stopped when the bear was gone. I would definitely recommend this site and will stay there again with out a second guess.

Our campsite #7, was really big, enough space for 2-3 tents part shade and part sun at different times of the day. Though note that some sites are quite tiny. All sites have bear lockers too. The toilets were the cleanest I’ve ever seen at a campground and they had hand soap too! The only downside was there are no showers at the campground. Showers are available at the boating locations. Loved this place! Host are very friendly and helpful. We stayed in spot #7, it had a fire ring in the middle and a bench on one side, the other side had room for a small tent. We had a bigger 6 person tent so we put our tent on the hill, which was slight slopes down but was not a huge deal. The bathrooms(flushable) with sink (no soap) were clean. Campground is walking distance to forks store and restaurant. It about 10-15 mins from Pine Village and 10-15 away from the boat rental Miller’s Landing.
