About HUME LAKE

Federal campground in California.

Nestled in the heart of California's Sierra Nevada mountains, Hume Lake offers RV campers an exceptional escape into nature's grandeur. This National Forest destination sits at an elevation that provides crisp mountain air, stunning vistas, and a genuine sense of seclusion from the bustling world below. The pristine alpine lake itself is the centerpiece of the experience, reflecting towering pine trees and granite peaks that create postcard-perfect scenery at every turn.

The lake environment makes Hume Lake particularly special for water enthusiasts. Clear waters invite fishing opportunities where anglers can test their skills pursuing trout, while the serene shoreline is perfect for those simply wanting to sit and absorb the mountain tranquility. Swimming and paddling are also popular activities when the weather cooperates, and many visitors find themselves spending hours just taking in the natural beauty from the water's edge or nearby trails.

Beyond the lake itself, the surrounding National Forest terrain offers extensive exploration possibilities. Hiking trails crisscross the area at various difficulty levels, allowing both casual walkers and serious trekkers to discover hidden meadows, cascading streams, and viewpoints that showcase the Sierra's raw beauty. Wildlife watching is common here, with opportunities to spot deer, squirrels, and numerous bird species throughout the day.

The location provides an excellent base for visitors interested in experiencing the greater Sierra Nevada region. Nearby attractions include access to some of California's most iconic natural wonders and outdoor recreation areas. The forest setting means cooler temperatures year-round, making it ideal for travelers seeking relief from hot valley summers while still enjoying outdoor camping adventures.

This destination appeals to families seeking genuine nature immersion, fishing enthusiasts, hikers, and anyone wanting to disconnect and recharge in a mountain environment. The combination of a beautiful lake, forest camping, and mountain vistas creates the kind of peaceful RV experience that keeps visitors returning season after season.

Gorgeous, stunning, well-maintained campground. Labor Day Weekend is pretty crowded with those who come for the annual Country Fair. Lots of families, dogs, bikes, pop-up tents, kayaks, etc! The trail around the lake is great for walking or jogging. There’s no cell service up in the mountains and the roads to get to the campground are very windy. Lots of families, dogs, bikes, pop-up tents, kayaks, etc! The trail around the lake is great for walking or jogging. There’s no cell service up in the mountains and the roads to get to the campground are very windy. There are several little shops and stores for snacks or Hume apparel. Picked up a few postcards at the Hume Lake General store and noticed there’s a post office right behind the store. It’s like a little town! There are kayaks, canoes, and paddle boards available to rent per-hour, half day, or whole day. The lake is beautiful at all times of the day and this campground is a beautiful place to enjoy nature and explore the woods.

When renting a camping spot, go through the state park website. The rented spot will be numbered and have your name. The spot includes an area to fit a tent plus some space, parking, a fire pit, and a picnic table. Restrooms are nearby. Pet friendly. There's a store nearby but limited supplies. Lake was beautiful. Bring a flashlight!

Beautiful scenery, small quiet lake, sandy beach area to hang out in the water, with store nearby if needed for last minute items, great spacious camp sites too along with trails for hiking nearby.

I would definitely stay at Hume Lake again! The hosts were great, coming around from time to time to make sure everything was going good. NO CELL RECEPTION UP THERE. We have T-Mobile so be prepared for that. The space we stayed at was #62. The view of the lake was not bad. The hosts were great, coming around from time to time to make sure everything was going good. NO CELL RECEPTION UP THERE. We have T-Mobile so be prepared for that. The space we stayed at was #62. The view of the lake was not bad. (We thought this was tent only campground so when the giant RV pulled in across from us, it blocked our view of the lake, bummer) You can see it thru the trees still. Our campsite was slightly at a slope with some uneven ground. But nothing serious. You could fit only 2 cars in our space. Looks like all the campsites have a bear safe container, an old wooden picnic table, and a grill/fire pit included. We did have a water spigot across from us. The bathrooms were clean, but they didn't have lights inside. Bring a flashlight. They also have large trash cans at a designated area on the campsite. It seems like the entire national park had free chopped up large pieces of wood everywhere. But I would definitely bring a saw or ax to chop it up. Also, everytime we prepared food at the campsite, there were these little yellow bees that wanted any type of food we had out. Really annoying. They weren't the common bees you see on flowers, but they only came around when food was out. Something to think about. Obviously there were mosquitoes too. Bring bug spray. There is a Christian Camp across from the lake that Some say gets loud when they are open season. Keeps that in mind if you want to avoid that noise. Some places we definitely recommend visiting around the park is Mist falls trail. It's about an hour away from Hume Lake. Very long hike so bring good hiking shoes, snacks and lots of water. Very easy/moderate hike. Look it up. And go see the amazing General Grant tree. Those giant Sequoia trees are breath taking.
