About HUTCHINS

Federal campground in California.

Nestled in the heart of California's National Forest system, Hutchins offers RV campers a genuine escape into the natural world. This national forest campground provides a more rustic camping experience compared to developed RV parks, making it ideal for travelers who want to immerse themselves in California's diverse landscapes while still having their mobile home as a comfortable base.

The setting at Hutchins captures the essence of California's backcountry character. You'll find yourself surrounded by the towering trees and open spaces that define the national forest experience. The quieter atmosphere here appeals to those seeking solitude and a genuine connection with nature, away from the busier commercial campgrounds that dot the state. Early mornings bring the sounds of wildlife and birdsong, while evenings offer peaceful stargazing opportunities in areas less affected by light pollution.

For outdoor enthusiasts, the national forest location opens up countless recreational possibilities. Hiking trails of varying difficulty levels wind through the surrounding terrain, offering everything from short nature walks to more ambitious day hikes. The forest environment provides excellent opportunities for photography, whether you're capturing landscape vistas, wildlife, or seasonal changes. Those interested in fishing, picnicking, or simply exploring the backcountry will find plenty to keep them occupied during their stay.

The national forest setting also means you're positioned to explore broader California destinations. Depending on the specific location within the forest, visitors often find themselves within reasonable driving distance of charming mountain towns, scenic byways, and other natural attractions that showcase California's varied geography and character.

Hutchins works particularly well for RV owners who appreciate a more authentic camping experience and don't require extensive hookups or commercial amenities. It's perfect for those who view their RV as a launching point for adventure rather than a resort destination. Whether you're a seasoned camper looking for a peaceful retreat or someone wanting to experience the national forest system, Hutchins provides an accessible gateway to California's wild spaces.

Nice campground, friendly host. Limited shade on site, but plenty of room. Walking distance to lake, about 10-15min. There's no cell service, have to drive 30min to get some coverage. CHECK ROAD CLOSURES before heading out. HW 162 towards Bucks lake was closed for 2 years, but Google maps and Waze didn't show it and it was a long detour.
