About KINNIKINNICK

Federal campground in California.

Nestled within the serene landscapes of California's national forest system, Kinnikinnick offers RV campers an authentic escape into nature without sacrificing basic comfort. This national forest campground provides the perfect basecamp for those seeking to disconnect from the everyday hustle while remaining connected to the natural world. The setting delivers that coveted balance many RV travelers pursue: genuine wilderness immersion combined with organized camping infrastructure.

The surrounding national forest terrain showcases California's remarkable ecological diversity. Towering trees create natural canopies that provide welcome shade during warm days, while the forest floor invites exploration of native flora and fauna. Early mornings bring the gentle sounds of birdsong, and evenings offer star-filled skies largely unobstructed by light pollution. This environment appeals particularly to nature photographers, birdwatchers, and anyone seeking to slow down and reconnect with the rhythms of the natural world.

Being situated within a national forest means access to extensive trail networks perfect for hiking at various difficulty levels. Whether you prefer leisurely walks close to camp or more challenging day hikes deeper into the forest, the surrounding area accommodates multiple skill levels and interests. These trails wind through pristine forest habitat, often revealing scenic vistas, quiet meadows, and peaceful streams. The changing seasons bring different experiences, from spring wildflower displays to fall foliage transformations.

For RV travelers, the location offers an ideal jumping off point for broader regional exploration. California's diverse attractions remain within reasonable driving distance, allowing visitors to balance quiet forest camping with cultural and recreational opportunities. The campground itself maintains that essential character of national forest camping: straightforward, reliable, and focused on the natural experience rather than elaborate amenities.

The park's solid 4.6 rating from actual visitors speaks to its appeal among camping enthusiasts who value authentic forest experiences. These reviews typically highlight the peaceful atmosphere, natural beauty, and the genuine respite the location provides from modern life's demands. This is the destination for RV travelers who consider the forest itself the primary attraction rather than on-site entertainment facilities.

The campsite is very close to the lake and well worth the reservation price. Make sure you reserve about half a year in advance because these sites fill up quick! Also bring warm clothing because it gets pretty cold at night. There is plenty of room to go exploring, fishing, and swimming by the campsite.

We had such a great time at Kinnikinnick Campground!!! Thank you to the two hosts for helping make our stay a fun and safe experience. Never have I seen campground bathrooms as clean and always stocked as they had them. Also, the fishing was soooo much fun. I caught 6 decent size trout and my boyfriend caught two little ones. All in all it was a good fishing day. If you're going to camp this is... We had such a great time at Kinnikinnick Campground!!! Typically we stay at Rancheria, but that campground was closed this season. We wanted to check out the campground at Kinnikinnick to see where our reservations were, and the camp hosts immediately flagged us down. We were simply driving through- my son, my husband, and my two dogs. The woman camp host said we would have a problem if we were staying here due to my dogs barking. Ummm...we just pulled up a campground on a yearly trip that my dogs always attend...they are excited! We reassured her that they are just barking due to excitement. She was rude and uptight. She claimed this was a "family campground." Apparently, my husband and 2 year old don't fit this "family" mold. Anyhow, we stayed cordial and appropriate, but because she left such a TERRIBLE taste in our mouth, we stayed at the campground down the road for the whole trip. I was terrified my dogs would bark at a squirrel, and she would kick us out. OR jeez, what if I sneezed??? She may call the police! I wrote a letter to the president of the recreation organization and am now leaving this review, as this woman and man should NOT be camp hosts. They are better suited for a military camp where they can dictate everyone and everything. Don't go here! There are plenty of other camps in the area with wonderful hosts.

Love Kinnikinnick, it’s just across the street from the lake. It’s always so quite, relaxing and you don’t have to deal with people walking through your campground to get to the lake. Close to good food and marina. Bathrooms are always clean and host are super helpful and knowledgeable of the area.
