About (Lake Alpine) Backpackers

Federal campground in California.

Nestled in the Sierra Nevada mountains, Lake Alpine Backpackers offers a pristine camping experience for those seeking to escape into nature's embrace. This national forest campground serves as an ideal base camp for adventure enthusiasts, whether you're planning to hike remote wilderness trails, fish in alpine waters, or simply unwind surrounded by towering pines and mountain vistas.

The setting around Lake Alpine is nothing short of spectacular. The lake itself sits at elevation, surrounded by granite peaks and dense forest that create a sense of true wilderness immersion. The crisp mountain air, especially during summer months, provides a refreshing change from lowland heat. Morning mist often rises from the water's surface, creating an almost magical atmosphere as the sun breaks through the surrounding peaks. This is the kind of place where you can genuinely disconnect from the outside world and reconnect with what matters most.

Lake Alpine's location makes it perfect for outdoor adventurers. The surrounding national forest lands offer countless hiking opportunities, from day trips to longer backpacking expeditions. Fishing enthusiasts will find the lake and nearby streams home to native trout species, with regulations and seasons varying throughout the year. Photography lovers discover endless opportunities to capture the region's natural beauty, from sunrise reflections on the lake to dramatic alpine landscapes.

The Backpackers campground itself provides practical access to these adventures while maintaining the authentic camping experience many travelers crave. This is a place where you can wake to pine-scented air, spend your days exploring mountain terrain, and fall asleep under star-filled skies unmarred by light pollution. The elevation brings cooler nights, making it comfortable to sleep even during summer months.

The nearest services and small mountain communities are reasonable drives away, allowing for supply runs when needed while keeping the campground setting gloriously undeveloped. This makes Lake Alpine Backpackers ideal for those who appreciate genuine wilderness camping with the convenience of vehicle access, perfect for families introducing children to backcountry experiences or experienced campers seeking authentic alpine adventure.

The forestry department has left the campgrounds an absolute mess after cutting down dead trees in the area I won't be going back even though I love the lake. Might go for day use only for kayaking
