About (Lake Alpine) West Shore

Federal campground in California.

Nestled in the Sierra Nevada mountains of California, Lake Alpine West Shore offers a spectacular alpine camping experience for RV enthusiasts seeking mountain beauty and outdoor adventure. This National Forest campground sits at elevation along the pristine shores of Lake Alpine, where crystal-clear waters reflect towering pine forests and dramatic granite peaks. The setting is quintessential California High Sierra, with cool mountain air, abundant wildlife, and natural scenery that justifies the journey to this remote and peaceful destination.

The lake itself is the heart of the experience here. The West Shore location provides excellent access to water activities including fishing for rainbow and brown trout, kayaking, and swimming during the warmer months. Anglers particularly appreciate Lake Alpine's reputation as a quality trout fishery, making it an ideal destination for those looking to combine camping with serious fishing opportunities. The calm waters near the shoreline are perfect for smaller watercraft, while the surrounding landscape invites exploration and photography.

Beyond the lake, the area is surrounded by excellent hiking opportunities. Numerous trails wind through the alpine forest, offering everything from short scenic walks to more challenging day hikes with stunning panoramic vistas. The region experiences genuine four seasons, with summer and early fall providing the most accessible camping conditions and the most comfortable weather for outdoor activities. The nights are cool and refreshing, perfect for sleeping under the stars, and the relative isolation means minimal light pollution for stargazing.

The location appeals to a diverse range of travelers. Families appreciate the natural playground of the lake and forest, where children can safely explore nature and develop outdoor skills. Serious outdoor enthusiasts and hikers find endless exploration opportunities in the surrounding wilderness. Fishing enthusiasts are drawn by the lake's reputation and accessible shoreline. Retirees and couples seeking peaceful mountain retreats discover the tranquility and natural beauty that characterize this area. Those escaping urban areas find genuine solitude and rejuvenation in the mountain environment.

The nearest services and supplies can be found in the surrounding communities, so planning ahead for groceries and fuel is recommended. The drive to reach Lake Alpine West Shore is part of the adventure, taking travelers through scenic mountain passes and away from highway corridors. This remoteness is precisely what makes the location special for those seeking authentic wilderness camping rather than developed recreation areas.

Beautiful Access!!! Restrooms, dog friendly, wild animals love you and ask for your attention, great views. I saw a bird that looked like a bald eagle fly off with a fish from the lake. I leered the fish in with my bad fishing skills and helped the bird catch it. We had a lot of great moments here. Paddle board across the lake with it felt like 15 mph winds pushing against us and currents lifting... Beautiful Access!!! Our campground keeper and leader was phenomenally amazing! I love her!

I have been camping in Lake Alpine for nearly 20 years. This place is Amazing. If you like to hike, ride your bike in trails, and fish, this place is for you. The camp grounds are kept clean by the hosts. There is so much peace when you sit by the lake while you wait for trout to take your bait. Check out my pictures. Those were taken while I was fishing.

Luckily, when we checked in, the camp host was incredibly accommodating and placed us side by side (sites 8 & 9) The location is stunning — the scenery is beautiful, and the campground is perfectly situated. Our sites were very close to nearby hiking trails, and the convenience store was only about a 10-minute walk, which made things easy. The bathrooms were kept clean and well maintained throughout our stay, which we really appreciated. Overall, we couldn’t have asked for a better camping experience. We’ll definitely be coming back in the summertime!

Great views. Clean campground. Restaurant food and supplies at Lake Alpine Lodge. The weather is perfect right now. Glad we came up this weekend. The only issue are mosquitos. Be prepared for them!
