About NORTH FORK (CA)

Federal campground in California.

North Fork offers RV campers an authentic escape into the heart of California's Sierra Nevada region, where towering pines, pristine waterways, and mountain meadows create an unforgettable outdoor experience. Located in the eastern Sierra foothills, this national forest destination provides the perfect basecamp for those seeking solitude, adventure, and genuine connection with nature.

The North Fork area is renowned for its exceptional outdoor recreation opportunities that appeal to diverse camping enthusiasts. Anglers will find excellent fishing in the North Fork of the San Joaquin River, where pristine waters teem with wild trout and native species. Hikers have access to miles of scenic trails ranging from gentle riverside walks to challenging alpine adventures that reward you with breathtaking vistas of the surrounding peaks and valleys. Mountain biking trails wind through the forest, offering exhilarating rides for all skill levels, while photographers will find endless subjects in the dramatic landscapes, wildlife, and seasonal wildflower displays.

The region's natural hot springs add another dimension to the camping experience, with several accessible soaks located within reasonable driving distance. These geothermal pools provide a unique way to relax after days of exploration and adventure. The river itself offers swimming holes and peaceful spots for contemplation, particularly refreshing during warm summer months.

Nearby communities like Bass Lake provide charming amenities, restaurants, and local services without compromising the wilderness feel. The elevation and forest canopy create naturally cooler temperatures compared to California's lowlands, making summer camping genuinely comfortable. Fall brings spectacular aspen and pine colors, while spring awakens the meadows with wildflowers and rushing snowmelt.

This is ideal terrain for families wanting to introduce children to camping and outdoor skills, couples seeking romantic mountain getaways, and experienced outdoors enthusiasts craving uncrowded backcountry experiences. The national forest setting means you're camping in one of California's most beautiful and protected natural areas, where the emphasis remains on preserving the landscape for generations to come.

Been coming up here for since I was a kid and the area never disappoints. Great fishing, great people. I would have to commend Camp Host Larry for being friendly and knowledgeable about the area. We hope to see him host for years to come!

Lovely spot. Thankful to have found a place to camp . . . COVID has so many people retreating into the wilderness. This place had many available spots unlike some of the surrounding areas.

It's a little oasis in the middle of a lot of burned trees. Camp sites are nice but nothing to do unless you drive somewhere. Water was flowing too fast and too inaccessible to be a good place to have any water fun.
