Pinyon Flat Campground is one of those quiet, underrated spots that’s perfect when you want to escape the city without driving too far. It’s small, with about 18 campsites total, spread out nicely for privacy. Most times I’ve camped here, there were only a handful of other people, which makes it feel peaceful and remote. That said, it can fill up unexpectedly during holidays or random weekends, so it’s smart to arrive early if you’re coming during a busy time. The sites themselves are well-maintained, and each has a picnic table and fire ring. There are water spigots and trash cans located throughout the campground, which is a huge plus for cooking or cleaning up. The restrooms are basic and clean enough for a primitive campground, but just note that the toilets don’t have running water — they’re dry vault-style. It’s not a big deal if you come prepared, but it’s good to know ahead of time. The views of the surrounding desert and mountains are stunning, especially at sunset, and it’s quiet enough at night to actually hear the wind moving through the pines. You can even see the stars really clearly thanks to the low light pollution. Overall, Pinyon Flat is a great choice if you enjoy simple, peaceful camping with a real backcountry vibe. Definitely one of the more underrated campgrounds in the Palm Desert/San Jacinto Mountains area.

Campground is nice with vaulted toilets and water. Close to main road and housing. (traffic noise and barking dogs - but have dealt with worse) Some good hiking and Mountain Biking (MTB not allowed in wilderness areas). Overall pleasant. I’d come again for the activities but, not for a relaxing stay.
