About Rock Creek Lake Group Camp (Inyo National Forest, CA)

Federal campground in California.

Rock Creek Lake Group Camp sits nestled in the stunning Inyo National Forest, offering RV enthusiasts an exceptional mountain camping experience in California's Eastern Sierra region. This group-oriented facility provides an authentic escape into nature while maintaining convenient access to outdoor recreation and nearby communities.

The location itself is truly remarkable. At elevation, the camp is surrounded by towering pine forests and dramatic granite peaks that define this section of the Sierra Nevada. Rock Creek Lake, the centerpiece of this area, is a pristine alpine lake known for its crystal-clear waters and scenic beauty. The lake stretches across the valley floor, reflecting the surrounding mountains and providing a stunning backdrop for your camping days. Whether you're an early riser or prefer evening explorations, the changing light on these mountains throughout the day creates an ever-shifting landscape that makes this location feel special.

For those who love outdoor activities, Rock Creek Lake is a destination unto itself. Fishing is a primary draw, with the lake well-stocked and accessible from multiple points. The area supports a healthy population of trout, making it popular with anglers of all skill levels. Beyond fishing, the surrounding trails offer excellent hiking opportunities. Many lead to alpine meadows, smaller lakes, and viewpoints that showcase the region's natural grandeur. In summer and early fall, wildflowers dot the meadows, adding splashes of color to your explorations.

The Eastern Sierra location puts you within reasonable driving distance of several compelling destinations. Mammoth Mountain, famous for skiing in winter and mountain biking in summer, lies relatively nearby. The town of Bishop offers supplies, dining, and services. Death Valley National Park and Mono Lake are within reasonable day-trip distance for adventurous travelers. Ancient bristlecone pines, some of Earth's oldest living organisms, can be visited in the nearby White Mountains.

Rock Creek Lake Group Camp works wonderfully for family reunions, group gatherings, and multi-family camping trips. The group camping structure creates a sense of community among guests while the surrounding wilderness provides unlimited opportunities for adventure. Summer is peak season here, as snow typically closes the area during winter months. The relatively short but intense summer season means July and August see the most visitors, so planning ahead is essential. Spring and fall can offer quieter experiences with pleasant weather, though nights cool down considerably.

This location appeals to a wide range of campers. Families seeking a mountain adventure will find plenty to keep everyone engaged. Serious hikers and mountaineers can use the camp as a base for extended explorations of the Sierra backcountry. Fishing enthusiasts find excellent opportunities. Those simply seeking respite in a beautiful natural setting will find the peaceful forest environment deeply restorative. The group camping focus makes it ideal for coordinating multi-family trips or bringing together friends who want to share an outdoor experience.

Access to the area is straightforward via Highway 395, the main north-south route through California's Eastern Sierra. From the Bay Area, it's roughly a six to seven-hour drive. From Los Angeles, it's approximately five to six hours. These moderate drive times make Rock Creek Lake accessible for long weekends or extended vacations from major population centers.

The forest environment provides natural shade and a cooler climate than lower elevations, making summer camping comfortable even as valleys below experience intense heat. The thin air at elevation adds another dimension to the experience, with star-filled nights offering exceptional views of the night sky far from light pollution.

Every time we went anywhere near the lake I found multiple fishing hooks and fishing line everywhere. The line was wrapped around tree branches, floating in the water, strewn all over the beach. This nearly invisible and unbreakable line is death, d.e.a.t.h. for wildlife. I know, I worked for animal control for over a decade. When bird fly into fishing line stuck in trees, or get some caught around their foot they are quickly strangled or have their limb amputated (eventually by loss of circulation). This area is so pristine and unbelievable beautiful and I really feel angry thinking about how much dangerous trash those fishing are leaving behind. If you are coming to this lake to fish PLEASE do not leave an inch of fishing line behind, pick up any trash/line you see, and keep this place healthy for the generations to come.

What's great about this place is that they have a lot of very nice first come first serve spots. You'd probably stay here if you're doing the hike to Gem lake.Theres an extra bonus -the North fork of the river runs through here and there's a gorgeous trail that's quite long and shady all along the river. The camp host is very helpful. Good place to stay if you want to walk the trail it's just a fe... What's great about this place is that they have a lot of very nice first come first serve spots. There are some really fantastic and somewhat secluded Walk in sites at this campground. (There are also some weird spots that are right on the parking area, so choose wisely- if this is your thing, then great). The campground hosts Jean and Luis are absolutely the best! So friendly and they keep the grounds and bathrooms in tip top shape. Bring bug spray. Also there’s a small store at the rock... Also there’s a small store at the rock Creek resort nearby, that you can purchase camping basics like bug spray, and delicious cobbler! And please remember, never leave your campfire unattended, DROWN your campfire when you leave!! They even provide buckets at each campsite for you to do so. This place is beautiful and special.

great rock climbing. Stunning view no matter which side of the lake you're on, as long as you can find some high ground to look from.

Spent four nights tent camping here in late July. Very scenic, near lots of good hiking including an easy walk around the lake. Plenty of people fishing and paddling on the lake. Sadly the snow this year made it too cold for swimming. Campsites 21 through 26 are walk-in, meaning hauling your stuff about 500 feet from the parking area and a good walk from potable water and non-bush toilets. Site 26... Campsites each have a large bear box. Overall a great place. Next year I'll come later in the season for hoping for a slightly a warmer lake and less mosquitoes.
